Daylight saving time ends this Sunday, November 1, and clocks fall back one hour. For many of our kiddos, even a small shift in routine can affect sleep, mood, and behavior for days. The good news is that a few small changes starting tonight can make Sunday feel much smoother. 🕰️
Tonight, push bedtime about 15 minutes later. On Friday, try 30 minutes later, and on Saturday, 45 minutes later. By Sunday night, your child will already be close to the new schedule. Shift meals, naps, and bath time by the same amount so the whole routine moves together.
Keep the order of the bedtime routine exactly the same. When the timing changes, a predictable sequence like bath, pajamas, book, and lights out helps your child feel safe and know what comes next. A visual schedule or a first/then board can make this even clearer.
Use light to your advantage. Outdoor play and bright light in the late afternoon help bodies stay awake a little longer, while blackout curtains can prevent extra early wakeups once mornings get lighter.
Notice and praise the small wins. Staying in bed, waking at the new time, or getting through a tough morning all deserve celebration. ⭐
Expect a few bumpy days. Most children adjust within a week, and patience and consistency go a long way. If you'd like support with sleep routines or transitions, talk with your child's BCBA. We're always here to help. 💛
