Children's Medical Center provides exceptional care to patients from birth to 18 years of age. The practice consists of twenty Board Certified Pediatricians in four offices conveniently located in Palm Harbor, New Port Richey, Westchase and Lutz. We are open 362 days a year including early morning and evening hours as well as weekend hours. We visit newborns at Mease Countryside Hospital and the M

edical Center at Trinity. We offer same day "sick" appointments and have flexible scheduling for Well Child Checks and Sports Physicals and Pre-op Physicals. Our physicians are very experienced in handling general pediatric issues including, but not limited to asthma, ADD/ADHD, allergies, common childhood infections and we welcome special needs patients to our practice. We are more than happy to fill out your school forms, sports forms, immunization records, etc. at no extra charge. We sometimes require a few days notice for this service unless the forms are presented at the time of the visit, in which case we will fill out the forms immediately. Our offices employ highly trained staff and we have limited laboratory services at each location (complete blood count, urinalysis, rapid testing for strep, mono, rsv, influenza, pregnancy) and our staff is skilled at venipuncture for studies which need to be sent to an outside lab. Our patients may contact our offices 24 hours a day to ask questions of our experienced nurses and one of our physicians is always on-call for the group. In keeping with current technology, our offices are "paperless". Each of our patients has an "electronic chart" accessible to our nurses and doctors at all of our locations. We encourage you to schedule a complimentary "meet the doctor" visit to learn more about our practice and to visit our facility!

I loved my time on the Well, Now podcast with and talking about how we can help kids grow up healthy while supporting their emotional wellbeing.

Most parents I meet and work with, DO NOT want to emotionally harm their child while they embark on improving health or cultivating positive lifestyle behaviors.

In this interview, we talk about my book, Kids Thrive at Every Size, the Whole Child Healthy model, and the 8 Pillars of Wellness.

There’s a lot at stake as we think through ways to build health while simultaneously protecting wellbeing.

I hope you listen to this important conversation!

Is your child ready to take their bike beyond the driveway or sidewalk? Prepare them for new risks and road environments by checking their bike, helmet, and other equipment and teaching them how to share the road safely.

Each year in the United States, thousands of babies die suddenly and unexpectedly. Some of these deaths result from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related causes of infant death, such as suffocation. Review this graphic to learn more about safe sleep for your baby or visit http://safetosleep.nichd.nih.gov for more safe sleep resources. Always contact your pediatrician with any questions or concerns regarding your baby's sleep environment.

School demands many things that summer activities don’t — the ability to sit still, get organized, separate from their parents, etc. If your child suffers from anxiety, these demands can be very challenging. Here are 6 things parents need to know about starting school with vulnerable children:

1. MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS EMERGE AT BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIME: You can ease your child’s anxiety by modeling confidence and calm behavior, and by imposing structure in family life (mealtime, homework, and bedtime routines).

2. KIDS BRAINS ARE CHANGING DRAMATICALLY: The teen brain starts “pruning”— strengthening some synapses and eliminating many others and this temporary imbalance has been linked to teens’ erratic and risky behaviors, depression, and more. Set aside time each day to talk to your child about challenges and new experiences at school.

3. ANXIOUS PARENTS SEND ANXIOUS KIDS TO SCHOOL: Kids really are like sponges, absorbing the energy and adopting the behaviors around them. One of the most helpful things you can do is model calm, confident behavior.

4. TEACHERS MATTER, EVEN MORE THAN YOU THINK: Parents can get all kinds of information about a child from their teacher. Teachers are allies, and you should talk to them regularly.

5. HOMEWORK TIME IS CRUCIAL: Young children can benefit from their parents’ involvement during homework time. Parents should set aside time for a structured “homework session” each evening.

6. DON’T JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS: A lag in one area of development doesn’t mean a child has a disorder. If you think there might be a problem with your child’s development, talk to their teacher.

Parents and caregivers of girls with ADHD have some important things to consider when thinking about their daughters’ educational needs. For some families, this may include choosing between different school options if they are available.

One question parents should consider asking their daughter's educational setting is: Can we attend a school open house or schedule a tour of the school?

See post for more detail.
