Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The advice I would give someone starting is something I wish I had understood much earlier: you do not have to become someone else to be accepted.
Learn everything you can. Study. Ask questions. Be willing to change your mind when you learn something new. Listen to people who have more experience than you, but don’t automatically assume that someone else knows you better than you know yourself.
For many years, I spent too much energy worrying about whether people would understand me, believe me, approve of my work, or think I was strange. Eventually, I realized that if I waited for everyone to understand me, I would spend my entire life waiting.
Not everyone will understand what you are building. Not everyone is supposed to.
I would also tell people not to confuse kindness with giving themselves away. This is something I am still learning. When your work comes from your heart, especially when your purpose is helping others, it can be very difficult to charge for it. You may think, “If I can help, how can I say no?” But you cannot build something sustainable if you have nothing left at the end of the day. You can have a generous heart and still have boundaries.
And don’t be afraid of being wrong.
I think sometimes we become so attached to appearing knowledgeable that we stop learning. Some of the most important words I use in my work are “I don’t know.” There is freedom in being curious instead of needing to have every answer.
Most importantly, don’t build your life by comparing yourself to someone else’s journey.
There has never been another you, and there will never be another you. Your experiences, your gifts, your mistakes, your way of seeing the world—all of it creates something that cannot be duplicated.
So learn from others, but don’t become them.
Become more of yourself.
That is probably what I wish I had understood from the beginning.
