A common theme I see among my midlife peers is relationships that have started to grow more distant. Whether it be with your spouse, your children, or your siblings, the comfort and closeness that you once shared is getting harder.
A major block to having true connection with others is our overstimulated nervous system systems. We are constantly battling some type of internal stress, negative emotion, fear, etc..
This causes us to seek comfort and soothing in fast and easy ways, like scrolling, shopping, eating, etc.
A huge component of having your best decade ever ahead of you is focusing more on improving your relationships.
You should be able to sit in the presence of a loved one without needing to fidget, look at your phone, interrupt them, or have 1 million thoughts racing through your head when you should be listening.
If you struggle like I do with this, the ray of Hope is that these are all habits that can be changed. We have to be intentional about wanting to change them.
3 suggestions to start:
- Spend time in nature and truly enjoy it, look around, listen to it.
- Spend time in complete silence with no stimulation other than the hum of your surroundings.
- Spend time with someone you really love and be truly present with them. If it is your partner, increase physical touch with them. This naturally increases all of the chemicals that keep you connected and in love with each other ❤️
This is not an overnight fix. But these are all simple steps. You can take to make your next decade the best it can be. 💚
