Do you love being single and having the freedom it brings? Can you relate to the phrase, "single life is the best life," where you feel that it allows you to live in the most authentic, fulfilling, meaningful, and joyful way? Perhaps you might be someone who is "single at heart." Our guest in this episode is Bella DePaulo, PhD, who is a social scientist, the author of her book, Single at Heart, a leading expert on single life (and self-ascribed as single at heart), speaker, consultant, an academic affiliate in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a former professor of psychology at the University of Virginia for two decades. She talks to Equilibria psychologist, Erika Kawamura, PsyD, DipACLM, MSHROL, about what it means to be single at heart and how it is different from being single or unhappily single. She debunks common myths and stereotypes associated with single people, as well as how relationships, intimacy, and kids can still fit into a single-at- heart person's life.

New Article!
Children and teens are using social media younger than ever before. Early exposure to problematic trends and ideologies paired with repeated messaging about “ideal bodies” during critical development periods increases susceptibility to developing unrealistic long-term beliefs about food and self-image. Although there are a variety of resources to address internal (genetic, medical, mental health) risk factors as well as socio-cultural and societal risk factors (e.g. diet culture), caregivers often feel ill-equipped to address or mitigate unique risk factors imposed by social media consumption. This article aims to provide caregivers with a framework for how to more confidently address the increased risk factors for eating disorders (ED) imposed by social media and engage in ED prevention strategies.

What Leads to Family Estrangement Between Adult Children and Parents? It's Complicated!
The answer to this question will likely be different if you ask both parties. While some family estrangement can result from a fairly clear explanation, many others are far more complicated. Our guest, Kristina Scharp, PhD, an Associate Professor of Communications at Rutgers University at New Brunswick, talks to Equilibria psychologist, Erika Kawamura, PsyD, DipACLM, MSHROL, about the complexities of family estrangement. They discuss various issues including the common reasons contributing to that decision by adult children and how that is not an easy one to make, the emotional impacts on not just the parties directly involved but also everyone around them, and whether reconciliation is possible.

When we experience the loss of a loved one, we can often experience a change in our relationships.
Friends and/or family members we expected to show up might take a step back, while others, sometimes unexpected, may take a step forward with us as we grieve. One of the reasons someone may take a step back is not due to a lack of care but because they don’t have the emotional capacity, understanding or vocabulary to sit with someone in deep pain.
The death of a loved one is already challenging enough to navigate, the social dynamics changing in our other relationships can just add another layer of complexity to the journey. If you would like support navigating those changing social dynamics, please join us at the next free monthly virtual grief support group on Thursday, May 28th at 6:30pm. We will be discussing grief and the impact it can have on our relationships.

This April, Equilibria honors National Infertility Awareness Week (April 19–25). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 1 in 6 individuals globally is affected by infertility, while in the U.S. around 13.4% of women and around 11.4% of men have experienced infertility. (1)

Living with infertility can bring significant feelings of loss, isolation and hopelessness. At Equilibria, our therapists want those living with infertility to know that they are not alone. We want you to know that you are your infertility. As The National Infertility and Family Building Association has put it so eloquently, "We are more than one in six. More than a stereotype. More than a narrow narrative of who experiences infertility or how family building should look" (2).

We join with Resolve: The National Infertility and Family Building Association and encourage you to wear orange this week to raise awareness, as the color orange represents wellness, emotional recovery and warmth.

Equilibria has licensed therapists experienced in supporting individuals living with infertility. Reach out today to schedule an intake appointment, you don't need to live in silence.
