Every custom starts with a concept, then a pre-sketch, then a final paper sketch that becomes the digital mockup of what the mat will resemble. After the mock up is created and approved by the customer, I get to working on the physical mat.
That process requires me to create a digital grid over the mock-up that I created on the computer, and then create that same grid using chalk on the yoga mat. Once the mat is gridded and the image is gridded, I use charcoal to sketch the design onto the mat itself, using the grid as guides to replicate the image as closely as I possibly can.
Once the entire mat has been sketched out in charcoal, the wood burning starts. I use a wood burning tool to then draw over the sketch and create a permanent design on the yoga mat.
The final step is for me to clean all of the chalk and leftover charcoal off of the mat, leaving a clean, beautifully designed by hand cork yoga mat! It's a process, and if I'm completely honest, it's not cheap and is very time consuming. I can work on a custom yoga mat for 2 weeks before it's finished, that includes the process of creating the design initially, followed by actually drawing on the mat, a canvas that large takes quite a long time to complete. The more intricate the artwork, the longer it takes.
I know not everyone can afford a hand-drawn yoga mat, which is why I offer some of my artwork printed onto the same yoga mats, so you get the same quality, all available in the shop on the website 🫶
