Summer is here and with it is our newest cohort of BMRC Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) participants! The SSRP offers students an immersive experience that combines hands-on laboratory research with interactive classroom learning. The students will begin classroom sessions tomorrow morning and will focus on communication and networking, preparing competitive applications for medical or graduate school, and crafting an effective “elevator pitch” to clearly articulate their research.

Congratulations to Dr. Hiroki Kaneta, international visiting research scholar in our Ferguson Spine Lab, on being chosen as a recipient of the Annual Rehabilitation Institute Research Day "Best Rehabilitation Research" for his abstract entitled, "Validation of Experimental Rat Achilles Tendinopathy Models"

Dr. Kaneta joined the BMRC this past fall and has been an amazing addition to our team. Dr. Kaneta’s research project in the Ferguson Lab is focused on developing a small animal model of age-related Achilles’ tendinopathy using aged rats, a common condition in older adults that can lead to substantial morbidities, including chronic pain, functional impairment, and an overall reduction in quality-of-life measures.

We are pleased to announce our first-ever EUROSPINE Visiting Research Fellowship. We are excited to welcome Julia Mocking, a PhD candidate in neurosurgery, for a 12‑month fellowship beginning this summer.

Julia will be hosted in our Ferguson Spine Lab and Pittsburgh Orthopaedic Spine Research (POSR) groups, where she will engage in collaborative research with our core lab members. This fellowship marks an important milestone for BMRC and reflects our growing partnership with EUROSPINE as we work together to advance innovation and international collaboration in spine research.

Future researchers alert! Last week we were happy to welcome a group of students from the CNX Mentorship Academy, in partnership with our UPMC/CNX M.O.V.E.S Program. This group of students spent the morning with some of our core lab investigators, learning about their work and the day-to-day operations of a lab like the BMRC.

Special thanks to Dr. Bridget Deasy, Heather Shannon, Brana Sesay, our BMRC investigators and all who volunteered their time for their hard work in planning and executing the tour.

We will be welcoming back many of this same group this summer for an intensive, 3-day workshop!

Our Bethel Orthopaedic BioBank has reached an incredible milestone: 400 total patients and 15,000 total specimens! Those are the updated stats from this past week and we couldn't be more thrilled.

These numbers are the result of more than 18 months of work, averaging 22 cases and 830 specimens per month. We'd like to send a huge shout out to the team at the Pittsburgh BioSpecimen Core labs as well as all of our own BMRC BioBank team. This could not have been achieved without your efforts.

Together we are building an amazing resource for researchers worldwide to use in their studies and make breakthroughs in the way we treat and cure orthopaedic diseases.

Congratulations to this year’s cohort of Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) participants. This year’s program welcomes six talented students from both within and beyond the University of Pittsburgh.

The SSRP provides an immersive experience combining hands-on laboratory research with interactive classroom learning. Under the guidance of expert mentors in the BMRC Core Labs, students develop technical research skills while strengthening professional competencies. Classroom sessions focus on communication and networking, preparing competitive applications for medical or graduate school, and delivering a clear, effective research “elevator pitch.”

Congratulations to Diya Bhagat, Joseph Perry, Caelan McCormack, Derek Favorite, Ann George, and Matthew Shi, and thank you to the BMRC faculty and staff for their mentorship and support.

Gianluca Vadalà, MD, PhD, Ferguson Spine Lab alum, was tapped for the 2026 ORS Guest Nation Spotlight Session at this year's Annual Meeting. Our team has had a great time at so far! In addition to nearly 15 poster presentations from our various labs, members of our BMRC core laboratories also hosted numerous podium presentations on topics from total knee arthroplasty to how acid-metformin conjugate hydrogel enhances healing of cold-induced skin injuries.

Congratulations to those who are being recognized at the meeting this weekend, including NIRA Finalist Dr. Shotaro Kamijo and ISFR Poster Award Finalist Dr. Vasyl Pastukh.
