This summer's BMRC Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) brought together a talented group of undergraduate students. Over nine weeks, these students immersed themselves in hands-on research, worked alongside our BMRC faculty and developed the skills needed to pursue future careers in science and medicine.

We're proud to share today the BMRC SSRP Class of 2026 and highlight the unique backgrounds, interests, and research experiences that made this year's cohort so exceptional.

Great to see BMRC representation at yesterday's Duquesne Undergraduate Research Symposium! These students have spent the summer in our Musculoskeletal Oncology Lab with Drs. Ines Lohse and Kurt Weiss. Students presented their work at the annual summer research symposium, held by Duquesne University.

We couldn't agree more, Mr. Darwin. That's why we've worked hard to build a more collaborative and inclusive lab space where all of our core labs can work and elevate the study of musculoskeletal disorders. We're also so proud of our BMRC BioBank, a first-in-kind accurate encyclopedic data repository, fostering cross-institutional collaboration has officially collected its first patient tissue samples.

Dr. Nam Vo recently delivered a keynote presentation at the ARI Orthopaedics Conferences in Davos, an international meeting with roots dating back to the original eCM Conferences established in 1999. These pioneering conferences helped inspire the creation of the European Cells and Materials (eCM) Journal, one of the world's first open-access scientific journals.

While attending the conference, Dr. Vo was also pleased to reconnect with Dr. Chris Evans, the original Director of the Ferguson Spine Research Laboratory.

Today marks an exciting milestone for the BMRC BioBank with the collection of our first pediatric sample at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. This important achievement was led by Dr. Stephen A. Mendelson, Acting Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, UPMC Children's Hospital.

By expanding our BioBank to include pediatric samples, we are strengthening opportunities for breakthrough musculoskeletal research that can benefit children, adolescents, and young adults. This expansion broadens the impact of our research efforts and brings us closer to developing new discoveries that improve patient care across all stages of life.

We are grateful to Dr. Mendelson and the UPMC Children's team for their expertise and time.

Summer is here and with it is our newest cohort of BMRC Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) participants! The SSRP offers students an immersive experience that combines hands-on laboratory research with interactive classroom learning. The students will begin classroom sessions tomorrow morning and will focus on communication and networking, preparing competitive applications for medical or graduate school, and crafting an effective “elevator pitch” to clearly articulate their research.

Congratulations to Dr. Hiroki Kaneta, international visiting research scholar in our Ferguson Spine Lab, on being chosen as a recipient of the Annual Rehabilitation Institute Research Day "Best Rehabilitation Research" for his abstract entitled, "Validation of Experimental Rat Achilles Tendinopathy Models"

Dr. Kaneta joined the BMRC this past fall and has been an amazing addition to our team. Dr. Kaneta’s research project in the Ferguson Lab is focused on developing a small animal model of age-related Achilles’ tendinopathy using aged rats, a common condition in older adults that can lead to substantial morbidities, including chronic pain, functional impairment, and an overall reduction in quality-of-life measures.

We are pleased to announce our first-ever EUROSPINE Visiting Research Fellowship. We are excited to welcome Julia Mocking, a PhD candidate in neurosurgery, for a 12‑month fellowship beginning this summer.

Julia will be hosted in our Ferguson Spine Lab and Pittsburgh Orthopaedic Spine Research (POSR) groups, where she will engage in collaborative research with our core lab members. This fellowship marks an important milestone for BMRC and reflects our growing partnership with EUROSPINE as we work together to advance innovation and international collaboration in spine research.
