Wills Eye Hospital Retina Service is celebrating 65 years of excellence. At the top of the year, the Atlantic Coast Retina Club (ACRC) and Macula 2026 were held in Philadelphia, with a closing dinner was held at the Penn Museum to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Wills Eye Hospital Retina Service and honor Drs. William E. Benson and Julia A. Haller.

On Saturday, April 25th, Wills Eye Hospital, in partnership with Mid Atlantic Retina, held its 5th Wills Eye on Diabetes Day in Philadelphia. First held in 2022, this annual event has grown to include eighteen participating sites across Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New York, with a mission to raise awareness, eliminate diabetic vision loss and blindness.

Despite some rain, the event at Wills Eye Hospital had its highest participation rate to date. Over one hundred registrants had their vision evaluated, OCT, and wide-angle fundus photos taken. Snacks, childcare, relevant diabetic medical information, and counseling about obtaining medical coverage when needed were all provided to the participants for free.

Diabetic eye disease is the #1 cause of blindness among working Americans. Allen Ho, MD spoke with CBS Philadelphia on the importance of diabetic eye screenings and the free diabetic eye screening event at Wills Eye Hospital this Saturday.

Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and other sites around the region will host free eye screenings for Diabetes Day.

David Xu, MD of Mid Atlantic Retina, Wills Eye Hospital was the first retina specialist in the northeastern US to administer Encelto. This newly approved surgical procedure implants an intraocular device to treat macular telangiectasia type 2 by continuously delivering ciliary neurotrophic factor to the retina.
