It’s not just the objectively “bad” parts that haunt you after an abusive relationship. Sometimes the “Dr. Jekyll” moments can contribute just as much to the overall traumatic impact. It’s all a part of the cognitive traumatic dissonance survivors tend to struggle with.

Abusive people will often use the same types of wording to control, intimidate, and confuse you. Do you recognize this one? What other phrases do you think are commonly used?

Understanding psychological abuse isn’t always straightforward. From the outside, it can sometimes look like “mutual abuse” because victims may eventually react to chronic provocation, manipulation, or destabilization. Looking at patterns over time is often what reveals the underlying dynamic.

There are few things as painful as being in a relationship with an emotionally abusive dismissive-avoidant. This combination tends to lead to a kind of passive, painful, shaming rejection that erodes away your self-esteem and silences you into suffering without comfort or reprieve. It can also be used as an attempt to flip the script and guilt trip you into comforting them. Relationships with these types of people tend to be lonely.
