These pictures are from Moon Hill in Yangshuo, China. The picture on the river is from the LiJiang River.
These were taken during my winter break from school which lasted about a month. I extended it to 6 weeks. Yangshuo was one of my favorite places visited during my time in China.
It was on this excursion that I was able to see rural china, which was dramatically different than life in the capital city. China is HUGE, and much like the US, varies from region to region dramatically, making travel throughout the country a pretty amazing experience.
Travel is important for reducing stress. Stress reduction is important because chronic stress increases inflammation throughout the body, disrupts proper function of various biological systems within your body, like digestion, and it (stress) can kill.
If you are ever lucky enough to have the chance to travel to China....GO! Your mind will be absolutely blown by the beauty, hospitality, and thousands of years of history of their civilization. It is a truly remarkable place. ~Dr. Lou

Have you ever been so scared that you would've benefitted from an adult diaper?

On the border of Tibet, hiking through The Tiger Leaping Gorge in Southwest China, I had one of those experiences. This photo was take at the entry to the gorge. This is NOT what the entire 14 mile hike was like. This smile was pretty quickly wiped off my face by the near vertical drop of thousands of feet while walking on an 8 inch wide ledge with avalanches of rock above and waterfalls and wet ground below. Slippery, muddy trails at times with a fall that no one could survive. I have a pretty extreme fear of heights. I have a hard time standing on top of a ladder, even a barstool.

Fight or flight is a natural response that is evolutionarily designed to protect us. Get stuck in fight or flight though, and the body chemistry changes that occur and become chronic can be very harmful. Chiropractic care has been shown to help with your body's stress response. It makes it better. If you are not under stress you can stop after reading the next sentence.
We have tests at our office that will help us identify the toll that stress is having on you. Whether you feel like you are stressed or not. If identified we may be able to help.

If you jump a car like this, you may end up with a spine like this.

Axial compression also known as vertical compression, in this case of the spine can lead to what's called a "Compression Fracture" like the one pictured on this x-ray.
Compression fractures are bad. They hurt. They can lead to serious dysfunction biomechanically and neurologically. They are not easy to "fix" with surgery or without. "Jumping things" can lead to real trouble.

Next time you are thinking about jumping a vintage mini Cooper with "cone suspension" for fun, or a dirt bike or side by side, or mountain bike. Weigh the benefit against the possible consequences and make a decision based on what you need to do to be happy, and remember that hindsight is 20/20.

Compression, if not a medical emergency, can be improved with decompression therapy.

In1993 I went to the Great Wall of China 3 times.
Construction of the wall spanned more than 2,000 years from the 7th century BCE to the 17th century CE.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is said to have “begun” between 7,000 and 5,000 years ago.
Although the Great Wall was built in great part well over 1,000 years ago, it’s still standing.
Like the great wall, Traditional Chinese Medicine is still here too.
…Over 5,000 years of TCM use on humans and it’s still here. Let that sink in. Greater than 4,750 years before the United States became a country, they had begun formulating a system of healthcare that proved to be effective enough that it still exists today. That’s a large human trial with centuries of results.
TCM is generally considered to be much less invasive to non-invasive when compared to western medicine.
TCM side effects are rare.
TCM is hard to compare to modern western medicine because they are fundamentally quite different, but there is a place for both. They are often helpful for the same health issues.
For non-pharmacological medicine with fewer to no side effects, for many of our day to day ailments like allergies, TCM may be for you!

"Feng Ayi" (Aunt Feng) was my cooking instructor and teacher of the fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine during my nearly 2 years in China. This was her kitchen where my cooking lessons were put into practice. I would go to the market, purchase the ingredients for the dishes we would study that week, and she would teach.
In Chinese medicine all foods have properties that affect the function of one's "Qi". Proper functioning and flowing Qi is the essence of health in Chinese Medicine. Food was THE Chinese Medicine before acupuncture, cupping or other modalities existed. For example: Spicy foods in TCM promote what would be considered the "release of heat". When a person's constitution is disrupted by "excess heat" eating spicy foods triggers a cooling effect by causing one to sweat, sweating being our body's natural cooling method. In modern neuroscience terms, spicy foods trigger the TRPV1 receptors in our nerves that lead to sweating, thereby cooling us. Thousands of years of Chinese Medicine observations have proven to be accurate and "real" in many cases with modern day neuroscience research. What some think is hocus pocus, is often reinforced by the same type of modern medical research that people rely on for medication safety, surgery efficacy, and other justifications for medical interventions. Bias against Chinese Medicine when it often holds similar merit to western procedures but without the risk, is pretty "numb" as we used to say.

When I was 20 years old in 1993, I moved to Beijing, China.

For the first year I was an international student, studying Chinese language, culture and food. By the time my year was up, I had secured a job for my return, and after being back in the US for a month and a half, I returned to Beijing to work. During the nearly 2 years I was there, I had the great fortune to learn the fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from my cooking instructor who had great knowledge in the world of food and TCM. Additionally, between pneumonia, stomach bugs, and a variety of other minor healthcare experiences there, I received an education in their healthcare system which was at the time, very different than ours in many ways. When the opportunity presented itself in graduate school to add the study of TCM and acupuncture to my course load, I welcomed it as a natural segue given my experience from China.
I have been studying and practicing chiropractic / acupuncture for over 25 years. My time in China and my culinary studies while in Beijing, along with thousands of other experiences while living in and traveling throughout the country, have led to a most well rounded approach to not only acupuncture and Chinese medicine, but to healing in general.

I was always taught that working in acupuncture and TCM is a lifelong journey and evolution based on education, experience and time.

If you want to know "where your Chinese medicine and acupuncture came from", this was the beginning of that story. As I dig through old non-digital pictures, I will continue to take you on a bit of the journey that led to where we are today in our multidisciplinary office at 138 St. John Street in Portland.

This is interesting....
This report was sent to us from ANTHEM BCBS. What is shows is the top conditions based on age that incur costs for them as an insurer. *This is how they are justifying increased premiums.*
Those under 2 years old don't make the list for musculoskeletal conditions. From 2-19 when we learn to walk, we grow, and we do "silly" stuff with our bodies, including risky sports, sports in general, get into scuffles, fall a lot, etc, musculoskeletal conditions are number 5 on the list. From 20-39 as we grow into our strongest phase of life, musculoskeletal complaints are not making the top 5 "claim spends" for that age group.
When we hit 40, musculoskeletal complaints like back pain, hip pain and the like shoot back up to 3rd place where they remain for the rest of our lives.
Cancer is #1. Heart and circulatory issues, like heart disease, stroke and heart attack are #2. Those are the top two causes of mortality in the US as well. Then comes #3, which includes the leading cause of disability not only in the US, but worldwide, which is the category that includes back pain. Musculoskeletal complaints, like back and neck pain, are not only in the top three most costly conditions in the US by category, but they are also the conditions that will most likely leave you disabled and unable to enjoy your retirement, or even "mid-life", if you don't take care of yourself.

These stats don't lie. Wonder why your premium is going up by 20% this year. This is part of the cause. From age 40 onward, our third largest healthcare expenditure that usually doesn't kill us, is musculoskeletal conditions.

Chiropractors like Dr. Lou can help you shift the odds away from becoming a statistic, by helping you care for your musculoskeletal and nervous system (also on the list at various life stages).

If you don't like the odds when they are against you, you can do something about it. Call Dr. Lou. (207) SPINAL-1
