That tiny knock-brush sound lives in your body now 🫠

This is your permission to put the phone down for a minute and let your hands do something that doesn't need a reply. No inbox. No notifications. Just sand, a sphere, and nowhere to be.

Out of office (for 13 seconds) šŸ˜‰

Brought to you handmade from a Portland, Oregon studio šŸŒ€.

Between meetings, this is the way I’ve been reconnecting with my senses. I haven’t had time for a longer break, but it’s just enough to take me away from the intensity of the task at hand, and bring me back into my body. I’m so sick of plastic fidget toys and stress balls and wanted something a little different. This sand garden is called a Wonderscape, and it’s an innovative, beautiful sensory desktop tool created 18 years ago by Olander Earthworks.

Every sphere and tray you see here was designed, handmade and finished by a small, family-run team of artists who've been pouring concrete in Portland since 2008, one piece at a time. No two are exactly alike.

Your inbox will still be there when you get back 🧔. If you’re ready for something different, comment ā€œPLAYā€ and we’ll send you a link to this set.

One of my favorite things about this is that you can’t really do it wrong.

I can sit down at my desk mid-workday, with a Wonderscape tray of sand and a concrete sphere and have absolutely no idea what I’m going to make.

Sometimes I make a pattern I love. Sometimes I immediately roll right through it. Sometimes I just keep going because I like the sound of the sand moving and watching the random sand patterns appear and then disappear.

And honestly, after almost 18 years of making Wonderscapes, I think that’s still one of the most satisfying things about them.

You don’t need to be creative. You don’t need to finish anything. You don’t even need to be good at it. Just play for a few minutes and see what happens.

Maybe we all need more things where there’s no wrong way to do it 🧔.

Your brain doesn’t need to be optimized every minute of the day.

It probably doesn’t need another app, another productivity trick, or another thing telling you what you should be doing.

Maybe it just needs to do something pointless for a minute. Roll a sphere through the sand and unexpectedly make something satisfying happen.

That’s one of my favorite things about playing with a Wonderscape. There’s nothing to accomplish. No right way to do it. Just your hands, a solid concrete spheres, some sand, and a few minutes away from the digital noise.

Today I’m playing with our 8ā€ Deep Dish So Satisfying Wonderscape. I love its compact size and cool colors.

Honestly… sometimes doing something completely unnecessary is just what I needed in that moment.

What would you choose for a tiny break today? Drop your current favorite emoji below and I’ll send you a link to this set! šŸ‘‡

Is handmade dead?

I really hope not. Because we’re still here. Still making things by hand. Still sticking our necks out and experimenting. Still having weird ideas and making things that didn’t exist before we decided to try them.

This Wonderscape is called Siren’s Song, made right here in our Portland studio. And after almost 18 years of doing this, I think one of the things I value most is knowing that the things we send out into the world passed through our hands first.

Not a factory. Not a giant production line. Not an algorithm deciding what should exist.

Us. Our studio. Our hands. Our ideas.

That’s what you’re buying when you buy handmade. You’re not just buying a finished object. You’re supporting the people who had the idea and took the risk to make it.
The person who experimented until it worked. The small business that keeps making even when mass production would probably be easier and more lucrative.

You’re supporting the weird, beautiful, unnecessary things that make the world a little more interesting.

So no. I’m not ready to believe handmade is dead. We’re still here and we’re still making. From our hands to yours 🧔.
