A little cold & flu season PSA for all our parents ✨
It doesn’t matter if your kids are homeschooled, public schooled, private schooled or in daycare. This time of year brings A LOT of change.
Cooler weather, less daylight, more time indoors, busy schedules, sports, holidays, travel, later bedtimes, more stress and, of course, a lot more treats and processed foods.
It’s not always just about “more germs.” Our kids’ routines and environments change too.
A few things to start focusing on now:
#1 Sleep. Probably one of the most overlooked pieces of immune health. Protect bedtime as much as you can. 🙌
• Get them outside. Even when it gets colder. Fresh air, movement and sunlight are important year-round.☀️
• Protein + whole foods. Keep meals simple and nutrient dense. 🥩
• Watch the sugar. (This is a big one) Between school treats, sports, Halloween and the holidays, it adds up FAST. Refined sugar and highly processed foods don’t need to be an everyday thing. 🍬🍩
• Hydration. Especially once the weather cools down and kids aren’t asking for water as often as they were. 💧
• Hand washing. Before eating, after the bathroom and when coming home from school/activities. We don’t need to sanitize everything they touch.🤗
• Immune support. Vitamin C, zinc and elderberry are a few of my favorites when used appropriately for age and need. More is not always better! 🧡🍊
Also important this time of year: know which vaccines are live and have the potential for shedding. Rotavirus vaccine virus can be shed in stool after vaccination. The nasal flu vaccine can temporarily shed weakened virus from the nose. Varicella transmission from a vaccinated person is extremely rare (but can occur)and is mainly a consideration if they develop a vaccine-related rash. 💉
We aren’t going to prevent every cold, and we don’t need to.
The goal is to support our kids’ bodies BEFORE they get sick! Good food, good sleep, movement, sunshine, hydration, healthy hygiene habits and a little extra support when they need it.
Start now, not when the first runny nose shows up. ‼️
