💚 PTSD Awareness Day 💚

Not all wounds are visible.

For those living with PTSD, everyday life can sometimes feel like a battle that others can't see. Triggers can appear without warning. Sleep may not come easily. Memories can feel as vivid as the day they happened. And carrying that weight day after day can be exhausting.

PTSD doesn't mean someone is weak, broken, or unable to move forward. It is a real response to trauma, and it affects millions of people from all walks of life—including veterans, first responders, survivors of abuse, accidents, medical trauma, and countless others.

Today, we recognize the strength it takes to keep showing up, even on the hard days. We honor those who are healing, those who are supporting loved ones through their journey, and those who may still be struggling in silence.

If you're living with PTSD, please know this: your experiences are valid, your feelings matter, and you don't have to carry the burden alone. Healing isn't always linear, but there is hope, support, and help available.

💚 If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis or needs immediate support, contact the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988, or chat online at https://988lifeline.org/chat/.

You are seen. You are valued. And your story is not over. 💚

Long Post Ahead but a good one:

🧩 1. Simple Puzzles & Brain Games
Large-piece jigsaw puzzles
Matching games
Word searches (for those in early stages)
Sorting activities (buttons, cards, coins)

Why it helps: Encourages cognitive stimulation and can provide a sense of accomplishment.

🎵 2. Music & Singing
Listening to favorite songs from their younger years
Singing along to familiar tunes
Playing simple instruments like shakers or tambourines

Why it helps: Music often reaches parts of the brain that remain accessible even as memory declines and can improve mood and reduce agitation.

🌷 3. Gardening & Nature Activities
Watering plants
Planting flowers in pots
Walking outdoors
Bird watching

Why it helps: Fresh air, sunlight, and gentle movement can reduce stress and promote overall well-being.

📸 4. Reminiscing with Photos & Memory Books
Looking through family photo albums
Creating a memory box with meaningful items
Talking about favorite vacations, jobs, or hobbies

Why it helps: Long-term memories are often retained longer and reminiscing can foster connection and positive emotions.

🚶 5. Gentle Physical Activity
Short walks
Chair exercises
Stretching
Dancing to favorite music

Why it helps: Physical activity supports mobility, improves mood, promotes better sleep, and may help reduce restlessness.

💜 Bonus Tip: The "best" activity is often one that reflects the person's lifelong interests. A former baker may enjoy stirring batter, a retired mechanic may enjoy sorting tools, and a parent may find comfort in folding towels or organizing household items. The goal isn't perfection—it's engagement, comfort, and meaningful moments. 💜🧠

💜 Caring for a loved one who is experiencing Alzheimer's disease or dementia can be one of the most rewarding—and challenging—journeys a family can face. As cognitive changes progress, it's normal to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, uncertain, or even heartbroken at times. Please know that you don't have to navigate these challenges alone.

At Visiting Angels, our caregivers receive specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care training to better understand the unique needs, behaviors, and daily challenges that come with memory loss. We focus on providing compassionate care, meaningful engagement, and support that helps seniors remain safe, comfortable, and as independent as possible. Just as importantly, we're here to provide peace of mind and support for family caregivers who may need a helping hand along the way.

💜 Because caring for someone with memory loss takes a team—and we're honored to be part of yours.
