Hermitage Richmond

Hermitage Richmond A place to celebrate life, nurture the body, mind and spirit, and develop lasting relationships and Ivy Nelson. In 1920 Mrs.

Jonathon Bryan thought he had the perfect wedding gift for his bride to be, Winifred Duffy, a mansion in the booming new suburb of Ginter Park. It was 1911 and Ginter Park had a trolley that would get you downtown in 15 minutes for only 5 cents! The couple lived there for three years before selling their first home to the Virginia Apple Land Corporation, who sold it to W.H. Louise Bauer purchased

the home from the Nelsons and renamed The Hermitage. After living there for over 20 years, Louise was very pleased at the prospect of her home having a significant future as the first community of its kind in Richmond. She not only provided generous financing terms but she also gifted two magnificent pieces of furniture (likely because they were too large to move!) When you come to visit take a look at yourself in the gold leaf framed mirror in the main hall and examine the detailed woodwork on the massive étagère in the main parlor. The Hermitage’s story started as a home and evolved into the first community of its kind in the biggest city in Virginia. It continues to be a home with warmth, generosity and hospitality that betters lives in Richmond and beyond.

🏆 This month, we are highlighting Greg! 🏆

Greg has been a part of the Hermitage Richmond community since 2024. He was born and raised in New Jersey before moving to Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he lived for over 40 years. Greg attended Villanova University, where he studied physics and mathematics. Before college, he proudly served in the U.S. Army as a Specialist (E-4). After completing his education, Greg worked as a computer engineer supporting the military. He is a proud father to one daughter and enjoys listening to rock and blues music, spending time outdoors, and fishing. We are grateful to have Greg as a valued member of the community!

This month, residents were busy in the creative arts studio working on two different projects blurring the lines between 2-and-3-dimensional art. This incorporates a variety of art mediums, all of which sit raised atop a flat surface. Check out the finished projects involving various additives with acrylic paint, plaster reliefs of botanicals, and faux carved reliefs using clay and molds! 🪻🖼️

📸 Introducing this year's creative photoshoot with a spin: Kaleidoscope Portraits.

These portraits were created using a life-size teleidoscope, an open-ended kaleidoscope lens constructed from three mirrors. Each resident chose the setting of their portrait, with some outside by their gardens and others in interesting rooms in their homes, highlighting their unique flair and personality.

Caroline, Hermitage Richmond's Creative Arts Coordinator, was inspired to attempt this photoshoot after visiting Salvador Dalí's mirror dome, a geodesic funhouse where viewers see endless reflections at all angles. Here are just some of the Kaleidoscope portraits; the full portrait is displayed and showing in Hermitage Richmond's art gallery through October!
