Having a brand new student in the mix would be overwhelming for them, and I always want to make sure every minute in here is accounted for and high quality so brand new students get the best possible experience from the moment they walk in here.

Please also don’t invite extra family members to watch. It is likely almost every student will be here and it is going to be crowded. We might even have to ask some parents to sit in the overflow room, but we will get through this together.

Eggs, A Meatball Sub and St. Clair (aka Another Positive St. Clair Post!)

Sometimes eggs are more than eggs. And a meatball sub is… well, let’s face it, a meatball sub can never be more than a meatball sub. But the meaning behind it can be.

Yesterday I posted about one of our Street Edge SuperMoms bringing me farm fresh eggs. Today, out of nowhere, another Street Edge SuperMom brought me a meatball sub.

Even better: several parents have told me their kids want to come in early tomorrow before we film to help clean the school and make it look as nice as possible. That says everything.

For a long time I would get sad and nostalgic about the culture I had in my Kenpo school in Columbia from 2001 to 2005, and the same spirit I grew up with in my home school all through the 90s. Students and parents brought food, things to help and take care of the school, and treated it like it mattered. At the time I don’t think I fully appreciated how rare and special that was. I was never able to fully replicate that in other schools in other towns and cities.

Until now. In this town, in this county.

We have it here in St. Clair.

It’s amazing and it moves me more than I can really say here. I had a table at the big Back to School Fair in Union and was struck by how many people absolutely lit up when I said the school is in St. Clair. Several times people broke into big smiles, said welcome to St. Clair, and told me how great it is that I opened here.

I have been saying for months that despite all the negativity about this area, there are some very special families here and I continue to meet them.

It’s not just the parents. It’s the kids too. That’s why this school will always stay mission focused. No corporate feel. Just a growing, tight-knit community that actually cares about each other and about getting better.

Thank you to every Street Edge SuperMom (and Dad!) and every kid who shows up with that kind of heart. You’re the reason this place feels different.

I know life gets busy. Schedules change, things come up, and sometimes a punch card ends up with unused classes. I’ve had to make plenty of adjustments myself while working to grow this school, so I completely understand.

For next week only, any child with an expired punch card that still has punches left is welcome to come in up to two times (if there is more than one punch left). Use the classes you already paid for, so your kid can see old friends, hit the pads again, and remind yourself why the kids end every class yelling “I’m awesome!”

Apparently farm fresh eggs are controversial.😮🙃🐔

I posted a simple thank you to one of our Street Edge SuperMoms, Angela, for the farm fresh eggs she gave me (which will be shared with my mom).

Facebook then informed me that I lost a follower specifically because of that post.

Only at American Street Edge.😁

This school has always been a little different.

Real safety skills, quiet confidence, respect, and character… and yes, occasionally farm fresh eggs on the dining room table.

We do the hard work of helping kids and adults become safer and stronger, and we also get to be part of a small town community where people look out for each other in simple, genuine ways.

We’ve been doing this kind of practical, no-nonsense training since the early 2000s. People have tried to copy pieces of it for years. They can take the drills and the wording, but they can’t take the heart or the real relationships.❤

If you’re still here, thank you. You’re part of something special. A place that takes safety and honor seriously, but doesn’t take itself so seriously that it can’t smile about a carton of eggs.🐔🐔🐔

I’ve had a number of people ask about a class for seniors. I’ve tried before and no one showed up. I’m a little weary of that, but I still believe in this town and I’m not ready to give up on the idea.

So I’m going to try one more time.

𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟭𝘁𝗵
𝟮:𝟯𝟬 – 𝟯:𝟬𝟬 𝗣𝗠 (𝗶𝘀𝗵)

This will be a very low impact class focused on mobility, simple strength, and the classic American Street Edge mental concepts — awareness, quiet confidence, and practical safety ideas tailored for seniors.

Minimum suggested fee is only $5. Donations to the school are welcome and appreciated.

If enough people come and it feels like it’s worth continuing, I’d like to make it a regular thing every other Tuesday, or even every Tuesday if it takes off.

I'm extremely proud to have honored two more kids as official Third Card Kids in today's group class! This continues to show the trust and willingness to put in the work from both parents and their kids! I'm also proud that this young lady is one of three kids that joined up from when I hosted the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri St. Clair troop here at American Street Edge Self-Defense Systems!

***Why American Street Edge Is Different***

Many martial arts schools today run on high volume, frequent testing, assistant instructors and aggressive sales tactics. That model works for some.

American Street Edge was built on a different foundation.

The Street Edge system was formally created after four years of focused study (1999 - 2003) and introduced in my first full time American Kenpo Karate school in Columbia in 2003. It has been refined ever since. The kids program was carefully designed over six months in 2013 and has been continuously improved through parental and student feedback and relentless study.

We don’t chase trends or copy anyone. The work was already done.

What we value is quiet dignity and an honor-based approach. Old school discipline and respect combined with both time tested and cutting edge sociological, physiological and psychological concepts that actually help kids and adults in the real world.

We care more about the mission than counting money every night.

This kind of school grows more slowly, especially in the first year of full-time operation in a small town. But the families who stay see the difference. Kids become more aware, more respectful, and more confident. Parents notice changes that last beyond the carpet.

St. Clair and Franklin County benefit most when a school prioritizes substance, character, and real safety over flash and volume. That’s what we’re building here.

During the month of August, with these scorching temperatures, I might sometimes open a bit later in the afternoon (around 2 or 3) to attempt to keep the utility bill manageable. This will never impact classes. I'm happy to talk to spontaneous walk-ins seeking more info; however, if you want to come by, meet me and see the school, it's always recommended to send a message and set up an appointment, especially for times like this.

Current students and parents, I'll keep the school at a reasonable temperature, however, this is not a luxury retreat and training in anything from warmer to colder temperatures builds resilience. Please note any donations to the school goes towards rent and utilities.
