OSHA 1910 and OSHA 1926 are often confused. But applying the wrong standard can create major compliance gaps for facilities and contractors.

OSHA 1910 generally applies to general industry operations such as manufacturing, warehousing, and ongoing facility maintenance, while OSHA 1926 applies to construction, alteration, repair, and renovation activities. Which standard applies depends on the type of work being performed — not simply the type of facility.

Understanding the distinction is critical for:
• Compliance planning
• Fall protection requirements
• Machine guarding
• PPE requirements
• Contractor safety programs

In this article, we break down the key differences between OSHA 1910 and OSHA 1926 and explain when each standard applies.

Stop Falls. Save Lives.

Dakota Safety is proud to support the 13th Annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, taking place May 4–8, 2026.

Falls remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in construction, which is why awareness, planning, and prevention matter on every jobsite.

This week is an opportunity to pause, talk with your team, review fall hazards, inspect equipment, and reinforce the practices that help protect workers every day.

At Dakota Safety, we believe safety is more than compliance, it’s a responsibility.
