When Alea Martinez became pregnant after years of trying, she was also navigating housing insecurity, recovery from an abusive relationship, mental health challenges and a medically complex pregnancy.

Through Mass General Brigham’s Family Partnership Program, she received one-on-one support from Joyce, a community health worker who helped her access food, transportation, healthcare resources and postpartum care.

The Family Partnership Program supports patients with medically complex pregnancies, social needs, and who plan to deliver at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital or Salem Hospital. “One thing that really stands out about this program is that it spans a critical continuum of time for our birthing patients. We’re connecting with patients in early pregnancy, supporting them through birth and continuing to engage with them during that first year postpartum,” said Amaka Onwuzurike, MD, associate medical director for Maternal and Infant Health Equity at Mass General Brigham.

Today, Alea is raising her 8-month-old son, Sincere, while pursuing workforce training in healthcare with dreams of becoming a pediatric nurse. “Family Partners changed my life, and I’m forever grateful,” she said. Learn more in the .

Healing happens here — one handprint at a time.
At Salem Hospital’s Epstein Center for Behavioral Health, a once plain hallway has transformed into a vibrant mural of hope. Hundreds of colorful handprints — each created by a young patient on their discharge day — now line the walls, celebrating courage, creativity, and healing. Every handprint tells a story: of challenges overcome, milestones reached, and the strength it takes to keep moving forward. Some include messages of encouragement like “My illness does not define me” or “Damaged wings can be healed with a little bit of help.”
This growing mural is more than art — it’s a reminder to our patients and staff of the resilience of the children and teens we care for every day. And with paint bottles ready on the table, there’s always room for the next story to be added.

Patients north of Boston now have closer access to advanced cardiac care. Salem Hospital has successfully launched new A fib ablation program — offering the same high quality treatment traditionally available only at major academic medical centers.
Using innovative pulsed field ablation technology, the team at Salem Hospital completed its first procedures with outstanding collaboration across Mass General Brigham. This safer, faster approach means patients can return home the same day and avoid long commutes for care.
This milestone reflects the power of teamwork, planning, and a shared commitment to expanding access to life changing cardiac services.
