Your teenager doesn’t have to agree with your phone limit.
They don’t even have to like it.
But you also don’t need to yell, threaten, lecture, or wrestle the phone out of their hand.
Try:
Connection. Limit. Choice.
That small shift can completely change the tone of the interaction.
Listen to Episode 296 of the Single Parenting Reset Show for the exact scripts.

If your teen’s phone limit turns into the same argument every night, stop trying to solve the problem at 9:42 p.m.
Create the plan before the conflict.
Then use:
Acknowledge. Limit. Choice.
“I hear that you’re frustrated.”
“The phone still parks at 10.”
“You can plug it in now or take two minutes and do it yourself.”

Before you take the phone away because your teenager was disrespectful, ask yourself:
Am I trying to teach something—or am I trying to discharge my own anger?
A pause is not permissive parenting.
Your authority does not disappear when you pause. It becomes steadier.
In Episode 293 of The Single Parenting Reset Show, I’m giving you a practical three-step process to use before giving a consequence for disrespect:
Pause. Sort. Respond.

When your teen says, “Leave me alone,” try not to follow them with five more questions.
Say:
“I can see you need some space. I’ll give it to you, and I’ll check back at eight. You’re not in trouble. I just want to make sure you’re okay.”
This respects their nervous system without emotionally disappearing.

You are showing your teen that you can handle their silence and that the door back to connection remains open.

The first few seconds after your teen tells you something difficult matter.
If you immediately question, correct, lecture, or solve, your teen may decide that sharing creates more stress.

Try this instead:
Pause.
Listen.
Thank them for telling you.
Ask whether they want you to listen or help them think through what to do next.

You do not have to approve of everything your teen tells you to become someone they trust with the truth.

When your teen says, “I can stop whenever I want,” you don’t need to prove that they can’t.
Help them take the next step and pay attention to what actually happens.
Say:
“I hope that’s true. Then stopping now is the best next step. I’ll help you make a plan, and if it feels harder than you expect, we’ll get you more support.”
This response is calm, but it is not passive.
You are holding the boundary, helping your teen test their assumption, and making it clear that asking for help is not something to be ashamed of.

If your teen tells you that va**ng helps them calm down, do not dismiss that statement as an excuse.
It gives you important information.

You are not giving permission when you ask what the va**ng is doing for them.
You are finding out whether the v**e has been “hired” to help with stress, social pressure, focus, belonging—or ni****ne cravings.

The device needs to go. The boundary still matters.
But if you remove the v**e without addressing the need underneath it, your teenager may simply find another way to meet that need—and become better at hiding it.

Connection does not remove accountability.
It makes effective accountability possible.

“Just one more minute.”
You have probably heard that sentence hundreds of times.
You give your teen another minute—but five minutes later, they are still on the phone. Now you are frustrated, they are defensive, and a simple transition has become another argument.

Instead of negotiating again, try saying:
“The transition time is over. I’m not adding another minute. You can put the phone on the charger yourself, or you can hand it to me and I’ll put it there.”
Your teen still has a choice, but the phone boundary is no longer being renegotiated.

In Episode 288 of The Single Parenting Reset Show, I’m giving you five specific scripts for the phone conflicts that happen in real homes every day.

You will learn what to say when your teen ignores you, asks for more time, compares you to other parents, becomes angry, or sneaks the phone after bedtime.

Your teenager’s phone may be part of the problem—but it may also be where they go when they feel overwhelmed, lonely, anxious, or unsure where they belong.

Understanding that does not mean allowing unlimited access.
You can stay curious and still say:
“I understand that this is where you connect with your friends, and I’m still not going to let it take away the sleep your body needs.”
That is connection before correction.

Your teen needs a strong relationship and a clear boundary. The goal is not to defeat the phone. The goal is to protect your child’s health, responsibilities, and connection with you.

Solo summer trip to one of my fav places❤️…..I was met by the host with homemade cookies and a beer in the afternoon sun.

🚶Walks on the beach were shared with slow tunes from Chris (Stapleton), Tom (waits) and Luke (combs) … this combination along with the breaking of waves, sighs of relief and gratitude of where my life is felt like a home I didn’t know I had —within myself🙏

This Mary Oliver piece puts this moment into context. 👇

“So come to the pond, or the river of your imagination, or the harbor of your longing, and put your lips to the world.
And live your life.”
Mary Oliver.
