Unlike the TRAM flap, the DIEP flap preserves all the abdominal muscles. Patients undergoing DIEP flap reconstruction essentially receive a tummy tuck at the same time as the breast reconstruction. Since the abdominal muscles are spared, recovery is easier and patients retain abdominal muscle strength long-term.
