What an inspiring day at the LifeSharing Best Practices Symposium! 💙💚

From powerful personal stories shared by Natalie Gonzales and Katie Gonzales to evidence-based strategies that improve donation outcomes, today’s symposium reinforced the incredible impact of organ donation and transplantation.

One statistic that stood out: 44% of families surveyed reported declining donation because they were approached too late. Early referral and effective communication are essential to honoring patient and family wishes while maximizing the opportunity to save lives.

Our biggest takeaways: this is a team effort, how are you communicating, early notification is key, compassion and empathy, and connection.

Thank you, , for bringing together healthcare professionals, donor families, recipients, and community partners committed to the gift of life. We are grateful for all you do to educate, advocate, and improve outcomes throughout our region.

What an inspiring evening at the ENA San Diego Chapter meeting!

A special thank you to LifeSharing’s Sheryl Hunter and our guest speaker Jean Marie Ferguson for sharing their knowledge, passion, and personal experiences surrounding organ donation and transplantation.

As emergency nurses, we play a critical role in the donation process. While many people support organ donation, only about 1% of individuals pass away in a manner that makes organ donation possible, making every opportunity to save lives incredibly valuable.

We learned about the important work of LifeSharing, the Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) serving San Diego and Imperial Counties. Through the collaborative efforts of healthcare teams, donor families, transplant centers, and organizations like LifeSharing, 154 organs were transplanted in San Diego in 2025, giving patients a second chance of life.

Jean Marie shared her remarkable transplant journey, having undergone not one, but two kidney transplants. Her first kidney was donated by her father. 20 years later, when she needed another transplant, she faced only a 4% chance of finding a perfectly matched donor kidney, yet that miracle happened. Jean Marie’s story was a powerful reminder of the profound impact organ donation has on patients and their families.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this evening such a meaningful event.
