Forgiveness helps end perpetuating the chain of negativity.

In 1988, Mark Wahlberg was 16 years old when he attacked a Vietnamese man named Johnny Trinh in a racially motivated assault that left Johnny blind in one eye.
Mark served 45 days in prison. Then he got out and built one of the biggest careers in Hollywood.
For 30 years, he carried what he had done. Never reached out. Never found a way to close the distance between who he had been at 16 and who he was trying to become.
In 2016, he spoke publicly about wanting to find Johnny. To apologize in person. To ask for something he had no right to expect.
Reporters tracked Johnny down. Everyone assumed they knew what was coming. Anger. Refusal. Thirty years of pain directed at the man responsible for it.
Johnny said something no one was prepared for.
He said he forgave Mark. That Mark had been a kid. That people change. That he had watched from a distance as Mark built a life and raised his children well. That it was enough.
When Mark heard those words on television, he broke down completely.
They met in 2017. They hugged. And Johnny said the thing that mattered most, the thing that no apology or foundation or career could have given Mark on its own.
"You're forgiven. Now forgive yourself."
Mark started a foundation for young people heading toward the same roads he had taken. It has since reached more than ten thousand kids.
Some people who do terrible things stay defined by them forever. And some are met, decades later, by a grace so generous it has no logical explanation.
Johnny Trinh did not have to forgive anyone. He chose to. And that choice freed them both.

Today Officer Maxwell and Officer Brown had the opportunity to contact a Buddhist monk traveling through King City. His name is Jeffrey and has been in the area for about a week. He kindly accepts food and water donations, and does not accept money. Officer Maxwell donated two avocados and talked with Jeffrey about his beliefs, lifestyle, and attire. He is a great person and interesting to talk to. These moments remind us how important building relationships and connecting with people from all walks of life is an important part of serving our community. Jeffrey said he will be in the area for at least another few days before he continues on his journey. Safe travels Jeffrey!!
