Experts in how muscles react to strain and stress and how to keep one’s body performing at its best, our knowledgeable, experienced therapists custom design each session to meet your individual needs. Psoas Massage + Bodywork is San Francisco’s premier massage therapy clinic, consistently voted the No. 1 place for massage in the San Francisco Bay Area. Psoas (so-as) was founded in 2003 by Jennifer Lightstone and Scott Schwartz, two seasoned and talented bodyworkers who shared a vision for a different kind of massage company. Not as a spa but as a serious clinic, where clients could come to get healthier, feel better in their bodies, become better athletes, and address injuries that other methods could not seem to touch. Born from a desire to aid athletes and people in pain, Psoas also partners with traditional and alternative healthcare professionals to provide holistic and integrated care. Psoas maintains the highest standards in massage therapy, requiring therapists to have over 700 hours of education, a state license for practicing, and a minimum of 500 hours of client experience. Most of their therapists far exceed these requirements, with extensive clinical experience and thousands of practice hours on their resumes. Psoas continues to be therapist-owned and operated, ensuring that their business goals are centered on providing the most knowledgeable massage therapy available. At the heart of Psoas is a core philosophy that guides all their work—and sharply distinguishes them from other massage establishments. That philosophy is simply this: they believe that massage and bodywork are powerful tools for creating health and wellness in the body—and with expertise, one can quickly help people achieve a level of comfort and ease of movement that they might not experience otherwise. Based on this philosophy, Psoas provides a new and different approach to bodywork that their clients find both vital and refreshing. Pain isn’t just a signal coming FROM your body—it’s an evaluation made BY your brain.

When your nervous system is stuck in overdrive (high stress, old injuries, chronic tension), your brain keeps muscle tone high to "protect" you.

To break the cycle of chronic tension and pain, you don't just need to work on the tissue—you need to change the signal being sent to the central nervous system.

Here is how different manual therapy modalities help regulate your system:
Deep Tissue: Down-regulates sympathetic tone by stimulating deep mechanoreceptors.

ART / Neuromuscular Re-Ed: Retrains faulty motor patterns and restores clear sensory mapping.

Cupping: Decompresses nerve endings to interrupt pain loops via negative pressure.

Lymphatic Drainage: Clears systemic fluid while gently lulling your autonomic nervous system into parasympathetic "rest & digest."

Craniosacral: Directly engages the vagus nerve and central nervous system membranes to drop overall threat perception.

Which modality does your nervous system crave most right now? Let us know below!

Pain isn’t just a feeling: it’s feedback. 🛑

When your body hurts, the first impulse is usually to stop it as fast as possible. But treating a sudden sprain (acute pain) the exact same way you treat a persistent shoulder ache you've had for six months (chronic pain) won't get you very far.

Here’s why identifying your pain type changes everything:

⚡ Acute Pain is your body's immediate security system. It tells you something just happened and tissue needs time and space to repair.

🔁 Chronic Pain is often an echo. It’s your nervous system holding onto protective patterns, compensation habits, or joint imbalances long after the initial issue occurred.

When you know what kind of message your body is sending, you can stop guessing and start applying the right solution; whether that's active recovery, nervous system down-regulation, or targeted bodywork.

Get curious about your pain instead of just fighting it.

If your knee hurts, you look at the knee. If your lower back aches, you blame your back. But what if the actual cause of your pain is miles away from where you feel it? 🕵️‍♂️

Your body moves as a coordinated system, a kinetic chain. When you walk or run, your feet, ankles, knees, and hips have to work in perfect harmony. A tiny misalignment at the bottom can cause a massive compensation pattern at the top.

This is exactly why Gait Analysis is a game-changer. Instead of just treating your symptoms, it looks at the mechanics of your movement to pinpoint the root source:

🦶 The Feet: Are collapsed arches or overpronation forcing your knees to cave inward?

🦵 The Ankles: Is restricted mobility forcing your shins and calves to take a beating?

🍑 The Hips: Is a weak glute causing your pelvis to drop, throwing off your entire stride?

When you map out exactly how your body moves, clears the ground, and absorbs impact, the mystery behind chronic aches completely disappears.

Stop chasing the pain and start fixing the movement.

basic strength training, balance exercises rewire neuro-muscular control; speeding up the split-second communication between your brain and your muscles.

Sharpens Reflexes: Trains your joint receptors to adapt immediately to uneven or slick terrain, catching you before an injury occurs.

Calms the Mind: Demands complete mental focus, acting as a form of active mindfulness that lowers stress while building stability.

Full-Body Integration: Forces your feet, ankles, core, and posture to work together as one unified, highly functional chain.
