CANA The California Association of Nurse Anesthesiology is the professional state organization for CRNAs. CRNAs are Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs).

The California Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (CANA) has always provided a voice for nurse anesthetists through biannual meetings, a regular bulletin, continuing education in anesthesia, and professional representation in Sacramento and Washington, DC. Today, Californians benefit from nurse anesthetists enjoy an independent scope of practice because of legislative and regulatory gains made by CANA. Because nurse anesthetists provide cost effective and high quality care, they are an integral part of the answer to California's health care crisis. Nurse Anesthetists have provided quality anesthesia care and services for over 150 years. Today, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) administer approximately 34 million anesthetics in the U.S. each year to patients of all ages and acuities. CRNAs practice in every setting where anesthesia is delivered: hospital surgical suites and obstetrical delivery rooms; ambulatory surgical centers; the offices of dentists, podiatrists, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons, and pain management specialists; the U.S. military; Public Health Services; and Veterans Affairs healthcare facilities. CRNAs are recognized for providing the highest quality anesthesia care with reduced expense to patients, healthcare facilities, and healthcare systems. The cost-efficiency of CRNAs helps control escalating healthcare costs. CRNAs are critical to healthcare access. Nurse anesthetists are the primary anesthesia providers in rural America, enabling healthcare facilities in medically underserved areas to offer obstetrical, surgical, pain management, and trauma stabilization services. CRNAs practice autonomously in a wide variety of settings in 82% of California’s 55 counties which provide surgical and obstetric services in the state. California is also home to seven rural counties that depend solely upon nurse anesthesia services. CRNAs are an integral part of health care reform. California’s nurse anesthetists possess the knowledge, skills, and professionalism that our state’s rapidly changing healthcare market requires and demands as it moves through the 21st century. Today, CANA serves as a leader to promote partnerships with local communities and other healthcare professionals in its ongoing mission to advance patient safety and provide access to the highest quality anesthesia care for all Californians.

"Every vote shapes the future of patient care and of our profession. 🗳️

CANA was founded to protect nurses' right to provide anesthesia, and for more than nine decades it has been the voice of California's nurse anesthesiologists. The practice we have today exists because nurse anesthetists before us chose to show up, speak up, and lead.

Now it's our turn. The leaders we elect influence our scope of practice, how we're recognized and reimbursed, the future of anesthesia education, and whether patients can receive safe anesthesia care close to home. For CRNAs, that means protecting the practice we've earned. For nurse anesthesia residents, it means shaping the profession we're about to step into.

- Polls are open 7 AM–8 PM
- Mail ballots must be postmarked by today
- Not registered? California allows same-day registration at your county elections office or vote center

Voting is the first step. Get to know your legislators, join CANA, and stay informed, because advocacy is part of our practice.

Our patients trust us. Our future depends on us. Today, let's show up for both. 💛"

Happy Halloween! Hope your day is more treat than trick. Real question though; what's scarier: a difficult airway you didn't see coming, or the coffee machine being broken?

Today is World Anaesthesia Day. On October 16, 1846, ether was used successfully as a surgical anesthetic for the first time, transforming medicine and making modern surgery possible. Nearly 180 years later, anesthesia professionals continue that legacy every day.

CRNAs in California are more than anesthesia providers - they are highly trained advanced practice nurses who play a critical role in keeping patients safe before, during, and after surgery.
In California, CRNAs can provide anesthesia care without physician supervision when anesthesia is ordered for a specific patient. Their scope includes preoperative assessment, intraoperative management, postoperative care, pain management, medication administration, and responding to emergencies, critical care needs, and resuscitation.
This matters because access to anesthesia is access to surgery, obstetric care, trauma care, rural care, and timely healthcare.
CRNAs bring advanced education, clinical judgment, and accountability to every anesthetic.
Protecting CRNA practice means protecting patient access, provider efficiency, and safe anesthesia care across California.

AB 876 is a big win for California CRNAs. 🎉 This bill finally says in law what CRNAs have been doing all along—providing the full anesthesia care continuum: preop assessment and planning, induction and maintenance, and postanesthesia management. Clear language = less confusion, smoother workflows, and better protection for access to anesthesia care in hospitals, ASCs, and rural facilities across the state. CANA has been in the room every step of the way, making sure lawmakers understand who CRNAs are and how we keep patients safe. 💪 Want more wins like this? Stay engaged with CANA, watch for advocacy alerts, and consider supporting the CANA PAC so CRNA voices stay loud in Sacramento.

In many rural and underserved California communities, “No CRNA” can mean “No surgery.” CRNAs staff ORs, OB units, and procedure suites that would otherwise go dark—helping patients stay close to home for the care they need. CANA works alongside these CRNAs by advocating for policies that keep rural hospitals open, protect CRNA practice, and support sustainable anesthesia coverage across the state. From middle‑of‑the‑night C‑sections to urgent trauma cases, CRNAs and CANA together help keep access to safe anesthesia care within reach for every Californian. If you practice in a rural or underserved setting, we’d love to hear from you in the comments. What makes your community special?
