As a two-time cancer survivor and breast cancer surgeon, I love seeing how much medicine has evolved so we can now get to not only hope for surviving cancer but also thriving after it 🩷

Here are just a few of my favorite “and’s instead of or’s” of modern day cancer treatment:

✨ Taking out cancers successfully AND minimizing the daily reminders of having had cancer through less invasive approaches, smaller scars, and preserving sensation, function and body image

✨ Offering all of the treatment options to help prevent cancer from coming back to those who need it AND identifying patients at lower risk who don’t need more intense treatments through genomic testing and tailored approaches to help individualize each person’s optimal treatment plan

✨ Clinical research studies that not only investigate how well therapies treat the cancer but ALSO specifically look at long-term side effects including quality-of-life and other health impact

Here’s to so much more than just surviving 💕

Not enough thank you’s for the incredible for sharing her breast cancer journey to make sure others going through treatment know all their options and have access to choices that prioritize not just cancer outcomes but also quality of life 💕 So important for people to know that in the midst of all that breast cancer takes away from women, there are options like nipple-sparing and sensation-preserving mastectomy with immediate reconstruction that can allow women to keep more of themselves, and it is definitely okay to ask for these ✨

I tell patients all the time that I would fully trust the staff, anesthesiologists, and other surgeons at our surgery center with my own care or my family members’ 💕

While I didn’t expect to end my OR day at the center today getting my daughter through her own surgery after a volleyball injury, everyone at Presidio Surgery Center showed up for her in exactly the incredible way they do for our patients every single day - so so grateful 💕💕
