What is OPU? 🧬🐴

OPU, or O**m Pick-Up, is a procedure used to retrieve oocytes (eggs) directly from a mare’s ovarian follicles.

Using ultrasound guidance, a specialized needle is used to carefully aspirate the follicles and collect the oocytes. Those oocytes can then be matured in the laboratory and used for ICSI, where a single s***m cell is injected directly into the egg.

One of the major advantages of OPU is that it creates additional reproductive opportunities for valuable mares—including performance mares that may be actively competing.

What is ICSI? 🧬🐴

ICSI, or Intracytoplasmic S***m Injection, is an advanced assisted reproductive technique used in equine breeding.

The process begins with retrieving oocytes (eggs) from the mare’s ovaries through a procedure called o**m pick-up (OPU). Once the oocytes mature in the laboratory, a single s***m cell is selected and injected directly into the cytoplasm of the egg to facilitate fertilization.

Following successful fertilization and early embryo development, viable embryos can be transferred to a recipient mare or cryopreserved for future use.

ICSI allows us to combine advanced reproductive science with thoughtful breeding decisions—opening new possibilities for valuable genetics and future generations.
