Breeding season has a funny way of making people nervous once the calendar flips to June, but let's put things into perspective.

The average equine gestation is approximately 340 days. An embryo transferred on June 15 would be expected to arrive around May 14 of next year. That's a spring-born foal!

In fact, studies examining futurity champions across multiple disciplines have shown that many top performers were born in April and May. And remember: futurities are often the very first major events these horses compete in.

A June transfer doesn't automatically mean you're behind.

What matters most is producing a healthy pregnancy, managing your donor and recipient mares correctly, and making thoughtful decisions throughout the breeding process—not rushing a breeding simply because of the date on the calendar.

If you've been wondering whether it's too late to make a breeding decision this season, the answer may surprise you.

There's still plenty of opportunity left in the year.

Breeding season can feel overwhelming fast.

Timing, follicles, embryos, semen shipments, recip mares… there’s a lot that goes into it.

So let’s open it up:

Embryo transfer is all about timing.

One of the biggest factors in pregnancy success is synchronization between the donor mare and the recipient mare. Even a high-quality embryo still needs the right environment to establish a pregnancy.

That’s why we pay such close attention to ovulation timing, uterine health, and recipient mare readiness throughout the process. It is important that we are critical with the ovulation and CL check on transfer day, because that will determine whether the embryo gets transferred.

Sometimes that means passing on a recip mare that isn’t quite right that day — because protecting the embryo and maximizing pregnancy rates always comes first.

Embryo freezing is one of the most precise parts of the ET process.

After collection, embryos are evaluated, prepared in specialized media, and frozen through a carefully controlled process designed to protect the embryo’s cells for future transfer.

Frozen embryos can create more flexibility for scheduling, recipient availability, and transport — but not every embryo is an ideal candidate for freezing.

Every step matters when you’re handling something this valuable.

4 embryos per aspiration this 2026 season for Dr. Jacobo Rodriguez 👏

At South Valley Equine, we know every embryo matters. That’s why we focus not only on embryo production, but on making sure each embryo goes into a recipient mare that scans ideal on transfer day—giving our clients the very best chance at pregnancy success.

Sometimes that means passing on a recipient. That’s not wasting an embryo—it’s protecting it. 🐴

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic S***m Injection) has changed what’s possible in equine reproduction.

Instead of relying on millions of s***m to fertilize an egg, ICSI uses just one.

Here’s how it works:

• An oocyte (egg) is collected from the mare
• A single s***m is selected and injected directly into the egg
• The embryo develops in the lab
• Then transferred into a recipient mare

This allows us to:
– Use limited or lower-quality semen
– Breed mares that can’t carry a pregnancy
– Maximize valuable genetics

It’s one of the most advanced tools we have—and when used correctly, it opens doors that didn’t exist before.

What affects embryo recovery rates?

If you’ve been around breeding programs for a while, you already know—there’s no single variable that determines success. It’s the combination of factors working together (or against you).

Age plays a significant role. As mares get older, we often see a decline in oocyte quality—even when everything else looks ideal.

Uterine health is just as critical. A clean, well-managed uterus gives us the best chance at both fertilization and recovery. Even subtle inflammation or changes in the uterine environment can impact results.

And then there’s timing—arguably one of the most controllable (and most important) pieces. From ovulation management to when we flush, precision matters. Small deviations can mean the difference between recovering an embryo… or not.

At the end of the day, embryo recovery isn’t about luck—it’s about stacking the odds in your favor through careful management and attention to detail at every step.

If you have questions about your mare or your program, we’re always here to talk through it.

This is what early success looks like.

It’s easy to look at an ultrasound and not realize what you’re seeing, but this moment represents timing, precision, and a lot of behind-the-scenes decisions done right.

Every successful transfer starts long before this image!
