🚨 Industry News: UnitedHealthcare Reduces Prior Authorization Requirements
UnitedHealthcare announced it will eliminate approximately 30% of prior authorization requirements for certain Medicare Advantage and commercial plans beginning October 1, 2026.
The move follows growing pressure from CMS, state regulators, and provider organizations to reduce administrative burden and improve patient access to care. Other insurers, including Humana, have also reduced prior authorization requirements this year.
Why it matters: Prior authorization remains one of the largest contributors to delayed care, administrative expense, and reimbursement delays. Reducing unnecessary authorizations has the potential to improve provider efficiency and accelerate patient access.
MedCycle Solutions Takeaway: While this is welcome news, practices should not assume all authorization requirements have disappeared. Organizations should continue maintaining payer-specific authorization workflows and closely monitor which services remain subject to authorization.
