Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, a time to remember those that we have lost as well as honor the lives they led.

Since 2019, the Schenectady Cares Program has been partnered with New Choices Recovery Center, Catholic Charities, and the Schenectady County Office of Community Services to help connect people to critical substance use care.

If you or someone you love is in need of services, please consider the list of providers below.

Local Providers:

Catholic Charities/Project Safe Point – 24/7 Health Hub toll free # - 1-866-930-4999. Harm reduction services, overdose prevention (including naloxone) treatment readiness and referral, syringe exchange, HIV and Hepatitis C Screening. Fentanyl test strips and xylazine test strips are also available by calling the number above.

The Schenectady Cares Program at the Schenectady Police Department- walk-in program which helps individuals connect with services throughout the region. Ellis Emergency Department- Provides MAT and referrals to treatment, and CRPA (Certified Recovery Peer Advocate) support.

Ellis Living Room- (518) 831-1523. Provides an alternate to visiting Emergency Room for mental health crises.

Hometown Health - Offering health services, Certified Recovery Peer Advocates, Medication Assisted Treatment, and Outpatient Counseling. Helping with early intervention and treatment for those with a substance use disorder, all in a Primary Care setting. Project COAST - (Coordinated Opioid and Stimulant Treatment) – 866-518-4991. This is 24/7 same day access to MAT for individuals that use opioids.

Overdose prevention is about more than awareness — it’s about making sure people have practical information, support, and tools they can use when it matters.

New Choices Recovery Center is sharing our Overdose Prevention & Safety Plan, which includes:

• Space to create a personal safety plan
• Recovery and overdose support resources

📣 We’re Hiring: Prevention Program Coordinator

New Choices Recovery Center is seeking a Prevention Program Coordinator to help deliver, coordinate, and strengthen prevention services in schools and throughout the community.

This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys working with people, facilitating groups and presentations, building community partnerships, and helping programs stay organized, consistent, and effective.

Key responsibilities include:

-Delivering evidence-based prevention education, groups, presentations, outreach, and community activities
-Supporting prevention programs and approved curricula
-Supporting accurate WITNYS/OASAS documentation.
-Coordinating with schools and community partners
-Maintaining program, training, and outreach materials
-Supporting program tracking, evaluation, reporting, and workplan requirements
-Providing program coverage and operational support as needed

Preferred qualifications include:

Bachelor’s degree in human services, public health, education, or a related field
Two years of experience in prevention, education, training, outreach, or program support
WITNYS/OASAS experience
CPP, CPS, or a related prevention credential

We’re looking for someone dependable, organized, comfortable engaging with the community, and committed to helping prevention programs make a meaningful impact.
