Some advice I wish I could give my younger self. ❤️

The path may not always look the way you imagined, but that doesn’t mean you’re on the wrong one. Sometimes, the experiences that feel uncertain in the moment become the ones that shape who you’re meant to become.

✨ A reminder for this Friday: Trust yourself, stay curious, and give yourself time to grow.

What Inspired The Friday Pause?

In medicine, a pause is an intentional moment to stop, refocus, and ensure you're moving forward with purpose. The Friday Pause was inspired by that same principle. At the end of each week, Dr. Ellen Derrick takes a moment to reflect on a lesson, insight, or experience from her life as a mother, mentor, and vascular surgeon, inviting others to pause, reflect, and begin the next week with greater perspective.

Why Is Lipedema Fat So Difficult to Get Rid Of?

If you have lipedema, you may notice that fat in your legs or other affected areas can seem particularly resistant to change. But why?

As it is October, we’re shining a light on MCAS Awareness Month. 💜

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a condition that can cause mast cells to release excessive amounts of chemical mediators, leading to a wide range of symptoms that can affect different parts of the body. Because MCAS can look different from person to person, increasing awareness and understanding is an important part of helping those affected feel seen and supported.

Is Lipedema Obesity?

Not exactly. Lipedema and obesity are different conditions, although they can occur together.

Lipedema is a chronic disorder characterized by an abnormal, disproportionate accumulation of adipose tissue, most commonly affecting the legs and sometimes the arms. The affected tissue can be resistant to weight loss, and lipedema can occur in people across a range of body sizes.

Obesity, on the other hand, refers to an excess amount of body fat that can affect health and is generally assessed using measures such as BMI alongside other factors.

In this episode of The Friday Pause, Dr. Ellen Derrick reflects on the importance of setting boundaries, letting go of opportunities that no longer align with your purpose, and recognizing that every “no” can create space for something new.

Saying no isn’t always easy, especially when you care deeply about the people and opportunities around you. But sometimes, protecting your time and energy allows you to say yes to the things that truly matter.

✨ A reminder for this Friday: You don’t have to say yes to everything. Sometimes, the most meaningful opportunities begin with a no.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🩷

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and support those affected by breast cancer.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women, but early detection can make a significant difference. Knowing your personal risk factors, staying up to date with recommended screenings, and being familiar with changes in your breasts are important steps in taking charge of your health.

This month, we’re also recognizing the patients, survivors, caregivers, researchers, and healthcare professionals working every day toward better prevention, treatment, and outcomes. 💗

Awareness. Early detection. Education. Support.

Let’s continue the conversation and remind the women in our lives to prioritize their health, not just this month, but year-round.

Can Lipedema Affect Your Blood Vessels?

Lipedema is often discussed in terms of abnormal fat distribution, but research suggests that changes may also occur within the small blood vessels found in affected adipose tissue.

What’s Inside an Artery, and What Does It Do? 🫀

Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from your heart and deliver it throughout your body. Their inner lining, called the endothelium, plays an important role in regulating blood flow and keeping your vessels healthy.

When arteries are healthy, blood can flow smoothly. But over time, factors like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, and inflammation can damage the artery wall and contribute to plaque buildup, narrowing the passageway and making it harder for blood to flow.

Understanding what’s happening inside your arteries is an important part of understanding your heart and vascular health. ❤️

🫀 The Relationship Between Lipedema and Cardiovascular Disease

Lipedema is a chronic condition that primarily affects the distribution of adipose tissue, but its connection to vascular and cardiovascular health is an important area of ongoing research.
