Alaskans Own

Alaskans Own Premium Alaska seafood. Alaska's 1st Community Shared Fishery. Contributing to the greater good is at the heart of Alaskans Own and who we are.

Sustainably harvested by local small boat fishermen from the pristine waters of Alaska. 100% of profits donated to fishery conservation programs and health & resilience program. Founded in 2010 by a group of commercial fishermen in Sitka, the Alaskans Own Community Supported Fishery (CSF) was created to help make Alaska seafood more accessible to Alaskans while also helping Alaska fishermen make a fair wage. In addition, Alaskans Own’s founders wanted their seafood sales to generate funding for the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association’s fishery conservation projects. In other words, they wanted Alaskans Own to benefit the wild fish and marine ecosystems that make Alaska’s fisheries possible. Over the years, Alaskans Own has been a leader in the sustainable seafood movement, promoting small-boat fishing families and educating seafood buyers about the benefits of buying frozen fish. We’ve also helped address food security issues throughout Alaska and the Northwest, delivering more than 600,000 donated Alaska seafood meals in 2020. Alaskans Own’s founder and director, Linda Behnken, has been recognized with multiple awards for her leadership and contributions to fishery conservation, including:

• White House Sustainable Seafood Champion of Change Award (2016)
• Lowell Thomas Jr. Award for Outstanding Achievement (2019)
• Heinz Award for the Environment (2020)

Today, Alaskans Own remains a program of the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association - a non-profit organization - and 100% of Alaskans Own’s seafood sales goes towards projects that support conservation of Alaska’s fisheries, create equitable fishery access, and provide healthy seafood to communities in need. More than 10 years later, Alaskans Own remains committed to providing Alaska’s wild, sustainable seafood to families like yours and being a steward of Alaska’s wild fisheries for future generations.

Protect the Roadless Rule, Protect Our Fisheries!

On August 20th, the U.S. Forest Service released its proposed plan to move forward with removing Roadless Rule protections for the Tongass National Forest (and all national forests). That means more than 9 million acres of the Tongass National Forest will be open to road development and industrial logging and mining. The Forest Service’s proposed removal of Roadless Rule protections ignores strong public support for the Roadless Rule; in 2025, over 95% of public comments submitted to the Forest Service were in support of keeping Roadless Rule protections in place.

This week, we’re spotlighting ALFA’s summer program and outreach intern, Rhett, who joined us in Sitka this summer from the University of Virginia where he’s studying Environmental Science.

What’s your favorite Alaskans Own product? And why? Sablefish. This was always my mom’s favorite fish dish to eat, but we never had access to fresh, locally caught black cod. It is incredible how delicacies can become a staple food while in Alaska. I can’t wait to order some fish and make it for her when the summer concludes!

What’s your favorite way to cook/eat it?
Broiled miso black cod/sablefish using a Mirin, Sake, (White or Yellow) miso paste, and sugar marinade. Let the fillets soak up that miso goodness for three days. I’ve found 10 minutes in the oven on the middle rack at 350 degrees and then 5 minutes broiled over 500 on the 2nd rack from the top does wonders for the texture and flakiness of the fish.

What’s your favorite moment from your work at AO? I loved making coffee in the morning for folks. I know that as soon as one person chimes in, everyone wants a cup so I would always make enough for that third cup for a familiar face walking in.

What are you excited about this season? I am so excited to learn more fish recipes to bring to my senior year at UVA in the fall, to go hiking with staff, and to assist in upcoming distribution and programming events! Gaining experience through the retail end of AO has been really fun and I have met so many fascinating locals and passersby. I am so grateful for this summer in Sitka and am pumped for more laughs and engaging discussions in the office and from afar!

We were disappointed to learn last week that the USDA is moving forward with its plans to remove Roadless Rule protections for more than 9 MILLION acres of the Tongass National Forest, opening it up to destructive industrial logging and road construction. This decision endangers Southeast Alaska’s sustainable fisheries and the thousands of fishermen and businesses that depend on it.

In a press statement with our friends SalmonState , , and , ALFA’s executive director Linda Behnken said:

"Fisheries support the economy, culture, and Southeast Alaska way of life. And they do so sustainably, year after year, providing we take care of the forest, rivers and estuaries that the fish depend on. Compromising the fisheries, which annually contribute over $800 million in economic impact to this rural region, for short-term timber extraction funded by the federal government is an unthinkable trade off.”

Submit a comment letter to the USDA before September 21st and urge them to keep Roadless Rule protections in place for the Tongass! https://salmonstate.org/unleash-fish-not-clearcuts

Rising fuel costs are hitting Alaska’s fishermen especially hard this summer and raise a lot of uncertainty about what’s ahead for the future of the seafood industry - including future seafood prices. In this recent ADN opinion piece, Sitka fisherman Jeff Turner shares why he chose to install a hybrid electric engine on his commercial fishing boat and why it’s important for us to all do our part to slow down climate change and its impacts on our oceans.

“The ocean is resilient, but the current pace of change is unprecedented — too fast, too much. We need policy and political leadership to shift our country to renewable energy. Not only will that protect the fisheries we depend on, but it will save our livelihood and way of life.”
