Brandon Lovelace Martin

Brandon Lovelace Martin of Halifax passed away unexpectedly on July 2, 2026 at the age of 23. He was born in Oxford, NC on January 6, 2003 to Jerry Lovelace Martin, Jr. and Malina Justine Hicks, both of Halifax.

He was a member of Ebenezer Mennonite Church. Brandon enjoyed fishing, playing his video games and watching football. His passing will leave a large void to all who knew him.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his partner, Erica Cook Fears and Avery of Clover; siblings, Lacey Martin of South Boston, Caleb Martin and Jayson Martin both of Halifax; maternal grandmother, Cherri Hicks of Halifax; maternal grandfather, Thomas Hicks of Halifax; paternal grandparents, Janice Wilborn (William C) of South Boston; host of cousins; foster mother, Joyce Good and the rest of the Good family. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jerry Lovelace Martin and foster parent, Jarrell Good.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steven Powell officiating. Burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at 2219 Willow St., South Boston.

Jacqueline Palmer Powell

Mrs. Jacqueline Palmer Powell, 95, of South Boston, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, July 3, 2026.

Born February 1, 1931, in Halifax County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John Williams Palmer and the late Carrie Ramsey Palmer. She was married for 62 years to the late Leslie W. Powell, Jr.

To know Jackie was to know grace, kindness, and unwavering faith. She was the true embodiment of a Southern lady whose life was marked by quiet strength, genuine hospitality, and a servant’s heart. While her many accomplishments reflected a life well lived, nothing was more important to Jackie than her faith and her family. She loved deeply, gave generously, and found her greatest joy in caring for those she loved. Her home was a place of warmth, hospitality, and unwavering support for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Jackie grew up attending Crystal Hill Southern Baptist Church. After she and Les were married, the couple began attending First Baptist Church in 1955, where she remained a devoted and faithful member for the rest of her life. Mrs. Powell served her church in numerous capacities over the years. She was among the first women to serve as a deacon, taught Sunday School for many years, and was instrumental in establishing the First Baptist Preschool, helping create a lasting ministry that continues to serve young children and their families today.

Mrs. Powell possessed a remarkable gift for floral design and gardening. She found great joy in cultivating beauty and sharing it with others through her flower arrangements and gardens. She was an active member of the South Boston Garden Club and a devoted volunteer with the South Boston–Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History, where she generously gave of her time in preserving and celebrating the history of the community she dearly loved. An avid golfer, she remained active on the course well into her eighties. She was also an accomplished bridge player who enjoyed the fellowship of numerous local ladies’ bridge clubs and continued playing well into her nineties.

Dedicated to service beyond her church and family, Mrs. Powell was a proud member of the Berryman Green Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, where she faithfully served as Regent. She valued history, community, and preserving the legacy of those who came before her.

She is survived by her three children, Leslie W. Powell III and wife, Paige, of South Boston, Emily Ann Powell of South Boston, and Robert Palmer Powell and wife, Suzie, of South Boston; four grandchildren, Kelly G. Payne and husband, Daniel, of Paces; Leslie W. Powell IV and wife, Candice, of South Boston, Raleigh W. Powell of South Boston, and Holt Powell and wife, Rachel, of South Boston, six great-grandchildren, Ivy Palmer Powell, Jacqueline Paige Powell, Aidan O’Kelly, Luke O’Kelly, Noah M. O’Kelly, and Emma Blalock; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Jackie was also preceded in death by her two sisters, Muriel P. Tune and Betty P. Perry.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Powell Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Boelte and Rev. Thad Decker officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Richard Wayne Hall, Sr

Richard Wayne Hall, Sr. of Nathalie passed away on July 1, 2026 at the age of 82. He was born in Halifax County on August 20, 1943 to the late Thomas Richard Hall and the late Edith Magdalene Scott Hall. He was married to the late Gail Hall.

He was of the Baptist Faith. Wayne was a life-long farmer, beginning with to***co and in later years cattle. He found great joy working with the land as he spent many hours tending and caring for the land. His passing will leave a void to all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Lisa Frank (Mark) of Waynesboro, PA, Richard Wayne Hall, Jr. (Mary) of Crystal Hill, Heather Francis (Tommy) of Clover, and Brian Hall (Ashley) of Nathalie; five grandchildren, Faith Sprunger (Tim), Mary Lee Meyer (Charlie), John Thomas Francis, Emory Kate Hall and Conrad Maximus Hall; one great-grandchildren, William Finley Campbell; one sister, Nancy Carol Hall of Colfax, NC.

William Frank Reid

William Frank Reid of South Boston passed away on June 30, 2026 at the age of 79. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 11, 1946 to the late Francis William Reid and the late Julia Crowley Reid. He was married to Laura Antoniolli Reid who survives.

He was of the Catholic Faith. Bill loved the outdoors and loved spending time on his farm. He was an avid collector of H.O. Trains and enjoyed bowling at the World of Sports.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, William Frank Reid, II of Pine Bush, NY and Christopher Henry Reid of South Boston; three granddaughters, Emma Frost of Middletown, NY, Heather and Ashley Reid of South Boston; one grandson, William Carson Reid of Middletown, NY; three great grandchildren, Alexander Frost, Aiden Reid and Haisley Miller; two sisters, Julia Honchar and, Melanie Ferguson, both of Greer SC.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Joan Gale Kirkpatrick White

Mrs. Joan Gale Kirkpatrick White of Halifax, VA passed away Saturday, June 27, 2026. She was born in Leesburg, VA October 2, 1945 and was 80 years old. She was the daughter of the late James Henry Kirkpatrick, Jr. and the late Maude Elizabeth Kirkpatrick and was married to the late Samuel Reaves White. Joan attended Loudoun County High School and worked for the Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., until she moved to private industry where she worked until her marriage to Samuel White in 1978. They lived in Aldie, VA until moving to Halifax, VA in 1996. She was a member of Halifax United Methodist Church. She was fond of sewing, quilting, and was known for her cooking skills. She is survived by her brother Wayne (Betty) of Stuart, VA. Also surviving are three stepsons, Richard (Sue) of Chesapeake, VA; Steven (Melissa) of Newport News, VA, and Daryl of Altoona, PA. Also surviving are five grandchildren, one great grandchild, and numerous cousins. A graveside service will be held in the future at the Fairview Lutheran Cemetery in Bolivar, WVA.
