Minnie Hudson Grove

Minnie Hudson Grove of South Boston passed away on June 4, 2026 at the age of 88. She was born in Halifax County on April 8, 1938 to the late Fletcher Green Hudson and the late Etta Logan Conner Hudson. She was married to the late Irving Daniel Grove.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Curtis Grove and wife Mitzi of South Boston, James Grove and wife Jennifer of Altavista, Brenda Landrum and husband J.W. of South Boston; stepson, Irving Daniel Grove, Jr. of Chesterfield; numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; siblings, Herbert Floyd Hudson (Naomi) of Scottsburg, Ernest Howard Hudson of Fredericksburg, Frank Jacob Hudson (Nancy) of Scottsburg, Etta Mae Smith (Harvey) of Halifax; daughter-in-law, Anita Gregory; sister-in-law, Judy Hudson; host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her children, Janice Powell and David Grove; stepdaughter, Nancy Epperson; her siblings, Louise Waskey, Fletcher Wayne Hudson, Oscar Rogers Hudson, and George David Hudson

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2026 at 3:00 P.M at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Vance Midgett officiating.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, one hour prior to the service at Powell Funeral Home.

Peggy Joyce Marshall Valentine

Peggy Joyce Marshall Valentine of Vernon Hill passed away on June 4, 2026 at the age of 84. She was born in Norfolk, VA on September 26, 1941 to the late John and Lillian Roberson Marshall. She was married to the late Kay Eldridge Valentine.

She was a member of Faith Community Church where she served as longstanding Treasurer, and she retired from Wells Fargo as a bank teller. Peggy loved serving her community and did so by volunteering at the Good Samaritan, and at the Prizery. She was an avid reader and enjoyed collecting birds, especially the Cardinals. Her passing will leave a void to all who knew her.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Diana Valentine of Norfolk, VA, Debra Dickerson (Wayne) of Halifax, and David Valentine of Mt. Solon, VA; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother Charles Marshall (Diane) of Fort Myers, FL. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Dot Mynster and Mrs. Bill R. Phillips

A memorial service will be held June 13, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. at Faith Community Church with the Rev. Chris Randall officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

Robert Pratt "Bob" Carter

Robert Pratt “Bob” Carter of Halifax passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at the age of 69. Mr. Carter was born on February 22, 1957, in Martinsville, VA to the late Nancie Pratt Carter and Thomas Glenn Carter.

He graduated from Martinsville High School in 1975, where he proudly served as drum major of the high school band. Following graduation, Robert served four years in the United States Air Force. He later earned degrees from Radford University and New River Community College, where he studied Instrumentation.

In 1994, Robert and his family moved to Halifax County with Dominion Energy. He dedicated 29 years of service to the company before retiring.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Walker Carter; his children, Deanna Carter Perkins (Steve Bliss) and Scott Thomas Carter; his cherished grandchildren, Alana, Tucker, Abbagale, and Chevy; and his sister, Glenda Carter Massey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Carter of Martinsville.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Steve Bliss officiating.

The family will receive friends on Friday, one hour prior to the service at Powell Funeral Home.

Dr. James Wayne Adams, Jr.

Dr. James Wayne Adams, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Midlothian, VA on May 21st, 2026 at the age of 91. He was born on December 26th, 1934 in Halifax County. Wayne served as a beloved dentist in South Boston where he dedicated his time to helping generations of patients for over 40 years. The relationships formed through his dental practice extended to his staff and other dentists, many of whom he personally trained with a caring and compassionate approach.

He obtained a B.S. degree from William & Mary and went on to pursue a Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from the Medical College of Virginia (VCU). Wayne’s commitment to knowledge and personal growth reflected his dedication to being the best dentist he could be. He was also committed to his country, as he served in the Army National Guard for five years, six months and one day. Outside of his professional endeavors, Wayne was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. His love and involvement for the community of South Boston extended to The Prizery, where he was instrumental in the reimagining of the building, helping with renovations and fundraising. One of Wayne’s proudest accomplishments was his success on the golf course where he spent countless hours enjoying the fairways, greens and tap room of the Halifax Country Club.

Wayne was surrounded by love from his family and friends throughout his life. He is preceded in death by his adoring wife of 64 years, Janet Lloyd Adams, who stood by his side with unwavering support throughout their many years together. He is also preceded by his parents, James Wayne Adams, Sr. and Dorothy Evans Adams, as well as his sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Adams Fuller and Elizabeth “Bet” Adams Bullock. Wayne leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness: Daughter Anne Livingston Adams of Wilmington, NC and her daughter, Brooke Adkins of Yulee, FL, and son Huntington Adkins of Raleigh, NC; Son James “Jay” Wayne Adams, III, and his daughter, Gwen and sons Alex and Andrew, all of Midlothian, VA; Niece, Mary Lloyd Griesser and her daughters Elizabeth and Kate, all of Charlotte, NC.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Saturday, August 8, 2026, 2:00 PM with Jim Luedtke officiating. Janice Violet Clarke Hankins Goodman of Danville, VA passed away May 27, 2026 at the age of 83. She was born in Danville, VA on December 20, 1942 to the late Henry Linsey Clarke and the late Violet Estelle Hanks.

Janice loved to draw and paint and especially loved to read. Her passing will leave a void to all who knew her.
