For trauma patients, every minute matters. The Pierce County EMS Pre-Hospital Blood Program enables first responders to give blood products before a patient reaches the hospital.

The program expands access to critical care in the field and connects emergency response with hospital-based trauma care.

Program leaders Jeannie Nielsen, RN, program manager for the Patient Blood Management Program, and Shelley Briggs, RN, trauma program coordinator, share more about how the program helps critically injured patients receive treatment sooner.

Each year, MultiCare’s CEO & President’s Awards recognize teams and leaders whose work exemplifies our mission, vision and values. In 2025, this work was honored with the Award for Excellence in Caring for the Communities We Serve.

Fourteen-year-old Arianna is usually busy playing soccer or baking treats for her family. But when recurring weakness in her right hand and foot suddenly worsened, she was taken to MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital and then flown to MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma.

“I was left without words. No one thinks that they’re going to hear that one word: cancer,” says her mother, Aurora.

Arianna’s diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) marked the beginning of months of treatment and long stretches of time spent away from home.

Aurora is grateful that she could always be present thanks to the social workers who connected them with Helping Hands, a family assistance program made possible by the Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation. She said the credits for gas and food were a relief as they faced growing expenses and the practical challenges of being away from home.

When ALL upended life for Arianna and her family, Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation offered a baker’s dozen of Helping Hands.

Jaclyn Escalera, a wife, mother of two and design manager on the MultiCare marketing team, was 38 years old when she noticed something felt off.

“Even though it didn’t feel like a lump — it more felt like a line — I just knew that it didn’t feel right, and I knew that I probably needed to get it checked,” she recalls.

Because Escalera was under 40, she had not yet had an annual screening mammogram. Her primary care provider ordered a diagnostic mammogram, that led to additional testing and ultimately a breast cancer diagnosis.

Her message to others is simple: Pay attention to what’s normal for your body, and don’t ignore a change in your breasts.
