You're not being soft because you hugged your kid after they acted like an as***le.

You're not permissive because you leaned in when they pushed you away.

You're not "rewarding bad behavior" because you chose connection before correction.

You're parenting a human whose brain is overloaded.

The hug doesn't erase the boundary.

The toy still isn't getting bought.
Hitting still isn't okay.
The consequence can still happen.

But here's what so many people get wrong...

Kids don't learn emotional regulation because we make them feel alone in their hardest moments.

They learn it because someone stayed steady enough to help them through them.

Love doesn't have to disappear just because behavior got hard.

In fact, that's usually when they need it the most.

I worry far less about the parent who hugs their child after a meltdown than I do about the parent who believes affection should be earned by good behavior.

Because if your child only gets closeness when they're calm, compliant, and easy...

What are they supposed to do with themselves when they're overwhelmed, angry, or ashamed?

Connection isn't the opposite of accountability.

You can hold the boundary and hold your child.

One teaches them what not to do.

The other teaches them what to do when life feels too big.

And one day, they'll stop borrowing your calm...

because you spent years showing them what it felt like.
