What if future doctors could practice difficult conversations, complex procedures and critical decisions before ever treating a patient?

A combined $2 million investment from the Springfield Memorial Foundation and SIU School of Medicine is helping make that possible.

Through the Ed Curtis Laboratory for Innovation in Medical Education (ECLIME), students and healthcare professionals can use artificial intelligence and immersive technology to build skills, gain confidence and prepare for real-world patient care.

The investment includes a $1 million grant from the Springfield Memorial Foundation, matched by a $1 million commitment from SIU School of Medicine.

Be an advocate for your health and your community.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among people who don't smoke-and the second leading cause overall. Start by learning about radon and testing your home.

On Tuesday, November 3, swing through the Circle Drive at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU Medicine to pick up a free radon test kit for your home. Kits are limited and available while supplies last.

Location: 315 W. Carpenter St., Springfield
Time: 10am-2pm and 4-6pm

Then join us the next day, Wednesday, November 4, from 12-1pm for a radon education webinar. Learn how to test your home, understand your results, and learn about mitigation.

Testing your home and encouraging others to do the same is a meaningful way to speak up for health. Scan the QR code or visit https://loom.ly/HUZJQnw to register for the webinar and find local watch parties.

Presented by UIS School of Integrated Sciences, Sustainability and Public Health in partnership with the American Cancer Society's Illinois Lung Cancer Roundtable, with local kit distribution at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU Medicine.

Blood clots can happen to anyone, even professional athletes. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts’ recent diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism highlights the importance of recognizing the warning signs.

“Blood clots can affect anyone, regardless of age or activity level. If you notice unexplained swelling or pain in one leg, don't ignore it. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent life-threatening complications,” says Dr. Ruchika Goel, hematology expert at SIU Medicine.

Risk factors include prolonged inactivity, recent surgery and a history of blood clots. If you suspect DVT, seek prompt medical attention. Sudden shortness of breath or chest pain could signal a clot in the lungs and requires emergency care.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback developed a minor blood clot, but deeper more dangerous ones were later discovered in his vein and lungs.
