🎃 Trick or Treat… for everyone!

Halloween is full of fun, festive moments. But for children with communication challenges, saying “trick or treat” or “thank you” at the door can feel like a big barrier to joining in.

That’s why we created free Trick or Treat picture communication cards, available to download now on our website. 💛

Simply print them, tape them to your child’s trick or treat bag, and they’re ready to go! These visuals give children a way to take part in the fun, whether they point, show a card, or use them alongside spoken words.

🎃 Support communication at every door
🗣 Helpful for non- or minimally speaking children
🧠 Supports children with Apraxia of Speech
💬 Great for children with speech sound disorders
🍬 Helps kids participate in a way that feels comfortable

Communication doesn’t have to look one way. Pointing, gesturing, using pictures, and using spoken words are all valid ways to connect, and every child deserves the chance to join in the festivities. 🌿

Inclusion means making space for every child’s voice, however it sounds or looks.

Head to our website to download your free cards today! 🎃 And please share with friends, families, teachers, and neighbors who might find them helpful.

Happy Halloween from all of us at Chickadee Chatter! 🍂

Leave the leaves. 🍂 (And grow some language while you’re at it.)

Those leaves in your yard are doing important work. Tucked underneath them, butterflies, moths, fireflies, and toads are settling in for winter. So instead of raking or jumping in, try keeping the leaves where they are and visiting them as a “critter detective.”

Get down low, look closely, and narrate what your child notices:

🍁 “Crunch… listen!”
🍁 “Look, a tiny bug.”
🍁 “Shh, they’re sleeping.”
🍁 “So many leaves!”

Short, playful words matched to what they’re already curious about give them language to pick up in their own way. There’s no need to ask for repeats. Wonder together, and let the words follow.

Nature is the best language classroom, and the critters get a cozy winter too. 🐸

What’s the coolest thing your child has found under the leaves? 👇

Do you want to get the kids outside on a cold day, a warm day, a rainy day, but aren’t sure where to start? 🌧️

Feeling stuck inside four walls? Need to bring ideas to your principal or your community, and want them to see why outdoor time matters?

I think you’re looking for me.

I’m here to help you find your passion and give you the research, activities, and materials to take your first steps outside as a nature-based mentor. I’m so passionate about being outdoors, and I believe kids are at a disservice when they’re stuck inside just looking out at it.

Let’s get them outside. Boots with muddy feet. Hands in crunchy leaves. Listening to the birds all around them. 🍂

Let me help you get these kids outside for real, hands-on learning.

🌿 Week TWO in Tiny Trails!

This week, our Tiny Trails friends explored areas with babbling water and leafy underbrush, discovering some frogs along the way!

We created natural opportunities to work on anticipating language through songs and repetition, and used animal noises and sounds to support early phonemes and joint attention with communication. 💬🌱

One of our favorite moments? Pretending to be ducks while singing "Five Little Ducks" and having parents call their children back with a "quack quack quack!"

Tiny Trails is all about giving little learners opportunities to play, explore, communicate, and grow—without communication ever feeling forced.

🌿 Curious about Tiny Trails? You don't have to commit to the full program to see if it's a good fit! Families can join us for a single session for only $30 and try it out.

What does a therapy space look like?
At Chickadee Chatter, there isn’t just one answer.

Sometimes it’s a cozy office. Sometimes it’s a backyard, a treehouse, or beside the pond. Sometimes we’re exploring the farm, learning outside, or connecting virtually from home.

Each space gives us different opportunities to play, explore, communicate, problem-solve, and connect, allowing us to think intentionally about the environment that best supports each learner.

Meaningful communication doesn’t ONLY happen sitting at a therapy table. It happens while climbing, creating, discovering, talking, playing, and experiencing the world together.

From The Nest to the Treehouse, the Rackliff Family Farm to the great outdoors, our therapy spaces are designed to meet learners where they are, in more ways than one.

🌿 A little reintroduction—and a little more about the heart behind Chickadee Chatter.

I’m Katherine: a Speech-Language Pathologist, Outdoor Therapist, mom, lifelong Mainer, and the founder of Chickadee Chatter.

My work is rooted in the belief that some of the most meaningful learning happens when kids have the opportunity to move, explore, connect, and experience the world around them.

As an SLP, I’m always thinking about communication. As an Outdoor Therapist, I see endless opportunities for learning outside. And as a mom, I know how important it is for the strategies we give families to actually fit into real life.

I’m also lucky to collaborate with my husband, Jake, a Registered Maine Guide. Together, we combine our different backgrounds and skills to create experiences that support kids and families while giving back to the Maine community we both call home. 🌲

Because at the end of the day, I don’t just want kids to practice skills.

I want them to use those skills while making friends, trying something new, solving a problem, exploring a trail, getting a little muddy, and simply being kids. 🌿

That’s the heart behind Chickadee Chatter—and I’m so glad you’re here. 🐦

🌿 Week One in Tiny Trails!

This week, our Tiny Trails friends met one another and explored their new space full of exciting things to discover!

Along the way, we created natural opportunities to work on turn-taking, safe boundaries, and parent-modeled pacing and language expansion through play, movement, and time outdoors. 💬🌱

One of our favorite moments? Building sandy towers (decorated with fern leaves, sticks and stones) and pretending to be ants while marching in the sand, singing "The Ants Go Marching."

Tiny Trails is all about giving little learners opportunities to play, explore, communicate, and grow—without communication ever feeling forced.
