This week, we're celebrating the people who show up for children in foster care every single day.

At Step By Step Counseling, we are passionate about supporting children and families involved in foster care, adoption, and reunification.

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women in our armed forces who gave their lives while serving our country.

Because of their sacrifice, we have the freedom to gather with family, build businesses, support our communities, and do the work we love each day. At Step By Step Counseling, we are deeply grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside children, teens, adults, and families in their healing journeys, and we recognize that freedom is not something to take for granted.

Today is more than a long weekend. It is a day of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude.

To those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to the families who continue to carry that loss, we remember you today. Their courage, service, and sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we remain grateful for the freedoms we have because of them. .

The last week of school can feel like emotional dodgeball for families.

Parents are exhausted.
Kids are worn thin.
Teachers are hanging on by coffee and countdowns.

If your child is more emotional, forgetful, clingy, impulsive, or melting down over tiny things right now… it may not be “bad behavior.” Their nervous system may simply be overloaded after a long school year.

Recently, at my daughter’s soccer game, I found myself thinking about how much kids absorb from the adults on the sidelines.

Not just our words.
Our nervous systems.

They watch how we handle frustration.
How we react to mistakes.
How we talk to referees, coaches, other parents, and even them.

As both a therapist and a mom, I know youth sports can bring out big emotions in adults too:

Stress.
Pressure.
Fear.
Competition.
Wanting the best for our kids.

But sometimes our own emotions start taking over the experience.

And when that happens, support matters.

Counseling is not just for kids. Sometimes parents need a space too, especially when stress, anxiety, anger, overwhelm, or pressure begin affecting family relationships, sports experiences, or the emotional climate at home.

The goal is not just raising successful athletes.
It is raising emotionally healthy humans.

And sometimes that starts with the adults learning how to stay regulated too.
