October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and today (October 13th) is Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. This day sheds light on the realities of stage four breast cancer.

66% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at an early, localized stage, and early detections saves thousands of lives every year. The National Breast Cancer Foundation has resources available to learn how to detect early. It also lists resources specific to those whose cancer has already spread/become metastatic. Learn more at

National Recovery Month, started in 1989 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), is observed every September to increase public awareness of mental health and substance use disorders and to celebrate individuals in recovery.

As we wrap up this year's Recovery Month, we are reflecting on the awesome work being done by our EPICC (Engaging Patient in Care Coordination) program.

EPICC utilizes peer recovery coaches with lived experience to connect patients facing substance use crises to community-based treatment, harm reduction education, and immediate resources. As part of their comprehensive outreach and harm reduction initiatives, EPICC has been working alongside public health networks to distribute free, publicly accessible Naloxone (Narcan) kits.

September is Healthy Aging Month!

Healthy aging is about more than just physical health. It includes our mental and emotional well-being, social connections, access to care, sense of purpose, and ability to remain connected to our communities.

For older adults, behavioral health is an important part of the picture.

At BHN, we strive to help improve health outcomes and strengthen the system of care for individuals in our community. This includes supporting regional efforts aimed at providing resources and care coordination for older adults.
