The Moog Center for Deaf Education

A listening and spoken language program serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The Moog Center provides a supportive and stimulating learning environment for children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families. From the time we begin working with children and their families, our program focuses on helping the children learn to use spoken language well enough for that to be their means of communicating. Our emphasis on very young children underlines our belief in capitalizing on the critical learning period for language, namely birth to early elementary years. In addition to programs for children, we provide distance mentoring online to teachers and other professionals working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. We conduct workshops and share our successful techniques with other professionals throughout the United States, Canada, and South America via our Professional Education and Outreach Programs. Our staff also regularly engages in applied research projects to inform best practices, improve outcomes, educate others, and continuously contribute to the field of listening and spoken language intervention.

Moog is on the move! The Moog Center for Deaf Education is proud to be represented at two important conferences this September. Betsy Moog Brooks and Adrienne Stewart will attend the Hands & Voices Annual Leadership Conference (Denver, CO, Sept 17–19), marking the organization's 30th anniversary. Meanwhile, Liz Fales and Michelle Graham will exhibit during the MO-CASE Special Education Administrators Conference (Osage Beach, MO, Sept 20–21). If you're at either event, we'd love to meet you!

Happy National Read A Book Day! Did you know that reading books with children is a great way to introduce new words, teach them about the world, and foster imagination, social and emotional development, and empathy? Whether you are reading aloud or looking at pictures, reading books is a great activity to incorporate into your daily routine. Join us for our first installment of our Early Intervention Information Series of the 2026-27 school year: Making the Most of Your EI Services, presented by Betsy Moog Brooks and Rhonda Bennight.

To develop listening and spoken language skills, professionals encourage family members and caregivers to utilize a variety of strategies during their daily routines. This session will focus on how these same strategies can be incorporated into other therapy sessions, such as occupational and physical therapy. Participants will explore practical ways to embed language opportunities into therapy activities and routines, helping children build communication skills across settings and throughout their day. Collaboration among professionals and caregivers will also be emphasized to promote consistency and support meaningful language development.

The Moog Center plans to offer CEUs for ASHA and AG Bell for this session.

The Moog Center would like to thank McKelvey Homes for their generous support and donation. Chosen as McKelvey’s 1898 Society recipient for the second quarter of 2026, McKelvey Homes donated $1898 to The Moog Center for every home sold between April and June. On this rainy Flashback Friday, let’s reminisce on The Moog Center’s Annual Spring Picnic, hosted by our amazing PTO! Each year, the PTO plans a themed picnic for students and their families to attend. After a delicious meal, face painting, crafts, and indoor activities, we had a petting zoo in our own backyard! Cowboy Critters brought several animals and even brought a “unicorn” for children to ride. Thank you to Cowboy Critters for the amazing memories and to Moog’s PTO for all you do for our students, families, teachers, and school!

The Moog Center is proud to partner with West County EMS and Fire to provide unique, hands-on experiences for our students. Throughout the years, they have given tours of their firetrucks, ambulances, and even their station!

This spring, West County Fire and EMS graciously donated the chance to ride to school in a firetruck for our 30th Anniversary Silent Auction. Thank you for this incredible opportunity, and thank you to the family who won this item in the silent auction!

Our students joined in on the fun by watching their friend arrive to school in style, going inside the firetruck, and receiving a fireman’s helmet! This once-in-a-lifetime chance for one student led to a meaningful experience for all of our students and more opportunities to practice their listening and spoken language skills.
