💚 STIMMING is communication. 💚

Many children stim to help regulate emotions, process sensory input, express excitement, reduce stress, or feel more comfortable in their environment. Every child is different — and every child deserves understanding, support, and connection. 🌟

At Skill Point Therapy, we support children through compassionate, relationship-based therapy that celebrates who they are while helping them grow in meaningful ways.

Some examples of stimming can include:
✨ Hand flapping
✨ Rocking
✨ Repeating words or phrases
✨ Spinning
✨ Vocal sounds
✨ Pacing
✨ Hair twirling
✨ Leg tapping
✨ Sorting or stacking objects

Our Tampa and Brandon pediatric therapy team offers:
🧩 Occupational Therapy
🗣️ Speech Therapy
💙 DIRFloortime®
🌈 Autism support services for children and families

If you're looking for pediatric therapy in Tampa, Brandon, Riverview, Valrico, or the Greater Tampa Bay area, we're here to help your child thrive through connection, play, and individualized support. 🌻

🌟 Autism Masking in Girls and Boys

Some children with autism—both girls with autism and boys with autism—learn to "mask" their challenges by copying peers, rehearsing social situations, or hiding confusion to fit in.

On the surface, they may appear to be managing well at school or in social settings. From a child development perspective, this can make it harder to recognize what is actually happening beneath the surface. In reality, many of these children are working very hard to keep up.

Masking is often connected to sensory needs and differences in emotional regulation. The effort to stay "together" during the day can lead to exhaustion, anxiety, or emotional shutdowns once they get home.

Because of this, parents are often left trying to make sense of what they are seeing at home versus what teachers report at school. Masking is one reason autism signs can be missed or misunderstood, especially in girls, but it can also happen in boys in more subtle ways.

Understanding autism masking can help parents recognize what their child may be experiencing beneath the surface, not just what is seen outwardly.

Is your little one not quite hitting those speech milestones?

While every child develops at their own pace, some signs suggest it's time for a professional evaluation:

• Not babbling by 12 months
• No first words by 16 months
• Fewer than 50 words by age 2
• Difficulty following simple directions
• Frustration when trying to communicate

Remember, early intervention makes all the difference. Trust your parental instinct – if something feels off, it's okay to seek answers.

You're not alone in this journey. ❤️
