🚨 TEXAS PATIENTS: WE NEED YOUR HELP 🚨

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas has implemented a practice known as automatic downcoding—reducing the level of certain medical claims submitted by healthcare providers and paying them at a lower rate.

The problem? These reductions can occur without first reviewing the complete medical record that supports the care provided.

For independent medical practices already operating on increasingly tight margins, this creates another significant administrative burden. Instead of caring for patients, physicians and staff must spend valuable time appealing claims, submitting documentation, and fighting to receive appropriate payment for services already provided.

Why should patients care?

Because this isn’t just about physician reimbursement. It’s about your access to healthcare.

When insurance companies continually reduce payments while the costs of staffing, medications, supplies, technology, and regulatory compliance continue to rise, independent practices are forced to make difficult decisions. Some stop accepting certain insurance plans. Others reduce services. Some eventually close altogether.

Texas needs policies that protect patients and ensure insurers pay healthcare claims based on the actual care provided and the medical documentation supporting that care—not an automated algorithm designed to reduce reimbursement.

📞 We are asking our patients and community members to take action:

1. Call Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas Customer Service
Tell them you oppose automatic downcoding of physician claims without appropriate review of the medical record.

2. Contact your Texas State Representative and State Senator
Ask them to support legislation protecting Texas physicians and patients from automatic or algorithmic downcoding of appropriately documented medical claims.

You can simply tell them:

“I am a Texas patient and voter. Please support legislation preventing health insurance companies from automatically downcoding physician claims without appropriate review of the medical documentation. Independent medical practices are essential to our communities, and we need policies that protect patients’ access to care.”

Independent practices want to remain independent. We want to continue accepting insurance. And most importantly, we want to spend our time taking care of patients—not fighting insurance companies over payment for care we’ve already provided.
