Shifting labor dynamics over the long term is so hard to do. I think it works better to simplify things and look at everything as labor that both parties see the value in. Then you can work out your own relationship to the value of labor in your own life. How much labor vs. rest do you want? How much do you want to participate in meaningful labor vs need based labor? When do you decide how much is enough? What’s your plan for addressing anxiety that comes up when you’re not laboring when you grew up attaching your self worth to labor? When you start answering those questions then you can create more flexibility in your relationship to labor which makes your life feel more like a choice and less like a cage.

What sides of yourself has your family had to get comfortable with as you’ve expanded? I’ve had to get comfortable letting my intensity have a seat at the table even though it makes people close to me nervous.

One discouraging thing I’ve realized about deconstructing patriarchy is that you’re never “done.” Trying to create something different is like swimming against a current of how every other system in your life wants to behave. You can break out of one harmful system, only to realize you’re in a Russian doll of patriarchal systems. What’s your strategy for preventing burn out?

Until it’s the norm for women to take up as much space as men in relationships, then comments like this just reveal your internalized misogyny.

In grad school my professors said that most therapists burn out after about 10 years. I think a lot of that is because you start seeing how common “rules of relationship” break down in real life and you lose faith in the efficacy of your field. I think real progress can be made, but it takes a willingness to look critically at the industry from the therapist and deep desire for change from the clients.

I still grieve for the little girl that didn’t even feel safe in her daydreams and giving myself all the permission to daydream now. What do you dream of in your balance of work and life?

I used to say I’ll feel like working together again when we have leadership that actively tries to unite the country. Lately I’ve been feeling like it’s our job to unite, and then leadership has no choice but to be inspiring and collaborative. I definitely have my moments where I’m angry, but I also can’t live feeling hopeless forever.

I’ve been following for years. When I was experiencing the novelty of trying new things outside religion, I didn’t understand why she felt such a need to talk about tools for nihilism, until nihilism hit me. Now, choosing to have fun playing with claiming different beliefs has been so helpful. I’m not just getting through the responsibilities of the day anymore, I’m excited about life again.

Conversely, if you’re the more anxiously attached partner who feels insecure when your spouse doesn’t match your emotional energy, sometimes just naming what’s happening helps you feel better. It feels amazing to have someone energetically meet you where you are. Sometimes asking directly for what you are hoping for is all it takes. For example, “I’m feeling really frustrated about something and I’d love to talk to you when you have the energy to get mad about it with me. Let me know when it’s a good time!” It’s always considerate to know when you want someone’s energy and ask for it, rather than expecting someone to chronically be “on call.”
