“Don’t try this at home.”

There are very few situations where that phrase applies more than a hip replacement.

While we had a little fun creating this DIY Home Hip Replacement Kit, the reality is that hip replacement surgery is one of the most advanced and life-changing procedures in modern medicine. When performed by experienced surgeons using the latest techniques, it can help patients return to walking, exercising, traveling, golfing, playing with grandchildren, and living life without the constant burden of hip pain.

At Palmetto Bone & Joint, our team of anterior hip replacement surgeons has performed thousands of hip replacements and brings more experience with the direct anterior approach than any practice in South Carolina. This muscle-sparing technique often allows for less pain, a faster recovery, and a quicker return to the activities you love.

If hip pain is limiting your life, keeping you awake at night, or preventing you from doing the things that matter most, don't wait. The sooner you are evaluated, the sooner you can start your journey back to an active, pain-free lifestyle.

Leave the hip replacements to the professionals.

Schedule your appointment with Palmetto Bone & Joint today and discover why patients from across South Carolina and beyond trust our team for their hip care.

Meet Mr. Leonard!

When asked about his recovery so far after his Jiffy Knee total knee replacement with Dr. James Loging, Mr. Leonard’s response was “it’s unbelievable.”

Just under 2 weeks after surgery, he is already walking without the use of any assistive devices, using his pain medication very sparingly, and making excellent progress in physical therapy. His knee flexion has improved from 108 degrees to 115 degrees and most recently to 120 degrees.

Following surgery, Mr. Leonard elected to begin directly with outpatient physical therapy, where he has been working on range of motion, muscle strengthening, gait training, and balance. Physical therapy is a critical component of recovery after knee replacement. Consistent participation helps patients restore motion, rebuild strength, improve confidence with walking, and return to everyday activities as safely and efficiently as possible. The muscle- and tendon-sparing approach of the Jiffy Knee technique helps many patients progress through rehabilitation more quickly and achieve important therapy milestones sooner. Take a look at Mr. Leonard’s videos below describing his own experience with the Jiffy Knee.

Meet Mr. Livingston!

At only two weeks following the Jiffy Knee total knee replacement by Dr. James Loging, Mr. Livingston is walking with only a cane for assistance, no longer using pain medication, has achieved 110 degrees of flexion in his knee, and is back to many of his normal daily activities. He is comfortably navigating stairs and getting in and out of bed and his car with ease. Take a look at his videos below discussing his recovery and demonstrating his gait in the first few weeks following his surgery.

The Jiffy Knee technique is a muscle-sparing and tendon-sparing approach to total knee replacement that avoids cutting through the quadriceps muscle and tendon during surgery. By preserving these important structures, patients experience a faster recovery, improved early function, and a quicker return to the activities they enjoy.

If you think you may be a candidate for a Jiffy Knee total knee replacement and would like to learn more, we would be happy to discuss your options. Contact Palmetto Bone and Joint at any of our locations to schedule a consultation with Dr. Loging and his team!

Another fantastic outcome from Dr Barra at Palmetto Bone and Joint!

This is Mr. Koon! He had a robotic-assisted total knee replacement with Dr. Matt Barra last month. He had a "functionally aligned" knee replacement, where Dr. Barra provided him with a patient-specific, personalized alignment. He also received the modern press-fit implant which avoids the use of bone cement that can lead to loosening of the implant over time! At only 2 weeks post-surgery, he was pain free with full range of motion.
Personalized knee alignment translates to improved post-operative pain, function and a more natural feeling knee. Get YOUR knee back!
If you are interested in learning more about robotic-assisted knee replacements, functionally aligned/personalized knee replacements, or press-fit implants without bone cement, call one of our offices below to set up a consultation with Dr. Barra.

Check out another great recovery story from one of Dr. James Loging’s total knee replacement patients!

At just 12 days post-op, Kathy is already:
-Walking without assistive devices
-Managing pain with just Tylenol
-Achieving over 110° of knee flexion

She recently underwent a total knee replacement with Dr. Loging who utilizes the Jiffy Knee technique—a muscle-sparing approach that avoids cutting the quadriceps muscle and tendon helping to support early mobility and recovery.

Our orthopedic team at Palmetto Bone and Joint offers a variety of advanced surgical techniques to tailor care to each patient’s goals and lifestyle. We love seeing progress like this so early in the recovery process—check out Kathy’s story in the videos below!

At Palmetto Bone and Joint, our mission is to provide every patient with accurate, evidence-based guidance to protect your joint health and improve your quality of life.

If you’ve been told you need hip surgery, you may have heard about hip resurfacing as a “less invasive,” bone-preserving option compared to a total hip replacement. While it can sound appealing at first glance, the reality is that hip resurfacing often carries more risks than benefits—especially when compared to today’s advanced techniques like anterior total hip replacement.

In this post, we break down why hip resurfacing is frequently the wrong choice, the complications you should be aware of, and why anterior total hip replacement remains the gold standard for restoring mobility, reducing pain, and getting you back to the life you love.

Your hips deserve the best care available—let us help guide you there. 💙
