Is Your Child's Anxiety Normal...or Is It Time to Seek Help?

Every child worries sometimes.

It's normal to feel nervous before a test, a big game, or the first day of school.

But when anxiety starts causing a child to avoid activities, lose confidence, need constant reassurance, or interfere with school, friendships, or family life, it may be more than just "a phase." Anxiety becomes more concerning when it begins affecting a child's daily functioning rather than staying tied to a specific situation. (Child Mind Institute)

In my newest blog, I share 7 signs that may indicate your child's anxiety could benefit from professional support—and what parents can do to help.

The KidWise Parenting Minute 💜

Is My Child’s Anxiety Normal?

As a child anxiety therapist, one of the most common questions parents ask me is:

“How do I know if this is just a phase?”

It’s a great question because all children worry.

Children get nervous before school. They worry about trying something new. They may not want to sleep away from home or feel butterflies before a big game.

That’s all part of being human.

What concerns me isn’t that a child has anxiety.

What concerns me is when anxiety begins making decisions for them.

Here are a few signs that it may be time to seek support:

✔ Your child’s world is getting smaller because they’re avoiding things they used to enjoy.

✔ They ask the same “What if…?” questions over and over, needing reassurance to feel okay.

✔ They complain of stomachaches or headaches before school or other stressful situations.

✔ Bedtime has become a nightly struggle.

✔ Anxiety is beginning to affect school, friendships, or family life.

✔ Your family is changing routines to prevent your child from becoming anxious.

✔ Anxiety seems to be growing instead of fading with time.

The good news?

Anxiety is one of the most treatable mental health conditions in children.

Children don’t need to become fearless.

They need opportunities to discover:

“I can do hard things.”

That’s exactly what evidence-based treatments like ERP, I-CBT, and SPACE parent coaching help children and families learn.

If you’ve been wondering whether your child’s anxiety is becoming more than typical childhood worry, I’d be happy to help you think it through.

Sometimes a conversation is all it takes to help you decide on the next step.
