A moment to honor, remember, and reflect 🕊️

We recently gathered alongside team members and families for a meaningful memorial service honoring colleagues who have passed away. During the ceremony, each loved one’s name was added to a leaf on our Golden Memorial Tree—ensuring their legacy lives on in the halls they once served with such care and purpose.

We remembered:
Deborah Paland – Volunteer Services
Larry Pledger – Volunteer Services
Belinda Slocum – Intensive Care Unit
Catherine “Ann” Pokorski – Education
Dr. Michael McCollum – Operating Room
Christopher Gega – Operating Room
Bradley Norton – Operating Room
Rhonda Zoll – Food and Nutrition

Please share a favorite memory below if you knew them.

They remain forever part of our Sentara family. ❤️

After a sudden asthma attack causing cardiac arrest left 21-year-old Cherrish Faith Rodgers brain dead, her mother made an extraordinary decision: donate her heart, liver, pancreas, and kidneys.

Five people across the country now have a second chance at life.

“You never know when God will turn someone’s tragedy into another person’s blessing,” said Casanadra Hall, Rodgers' mom.

On Sunday, our hospital honored Cherrish with an emotional honor walk — her one-year-old daughter at the foot of her bed as staff lined the hallways in silence.

“She’s not dead,” Hall said. “She’ll live on through the lives she saved and through her children.”

A legacy of love, generosity, and hope.

Dave and Sarah Hummel were spending a quiet evening together at home. But just moments after falling asleep, Sarah realized something was terribly wrong. Dave was unresponsive and struggling to breathe.

As Sarah called 911, their sons jumped into action and began performing CPR. Then, in a moment Sarah says she'll never forget, she ran barefoot across the street late at night to get help from a neighbor who happened to be a surgeon. Together, their quick thinking helped save Dave's life after sudden cardiac arrest.

Dave was transported to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital before being transferred to Sentara Heart Hospital at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where doctors discovered he had experienced ventricular fibrillation, a dangerous electrical abnormality in the heart.

Today, Dave is not only recovering, but sharing his story in hopes that others will pay attention to their health before it's too late.❤️

Saturday at SVBGH was all about the people who keep this place moving.🏥❤️

The laboratory🧪, emergency department🩹, food services🍴, housekeeping🧼, maintenance🛠, security👮🏾‍♂️, and our clinicians 👩🏻‍⚕️ — the teams who feel the work every day.

Market Chief Nursing Officer, Sonia Cooper, spent part of her Saturday rounding with them, dropping off snacks, saying thank you, and catching up with the folks who care for our community every weekend.

With 12 years of her early Sentara career rooted at SVBGH, and the last three years as their CNO, she reconnected with familiar faces and met the new teammates carrying the work forward.

Because the people closest to the work show us what patients need, what teams need, and what great care requires. ❤️
