π§ What Is TMS?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment for treatment-resistant Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in appropriate candidates.
π§²TMS uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation and symptom management. TMS does not require medication to circulate throughout the body.
π«ππ«πUnlike ECT, TMS does not require anesthesia or intentionally induce a seizure. Treatment is performed while the patient remains awake and alert, allowing patients to return to their usual activities after the session.
How does it work?
A treatment coil is positioned against the scalp. The device delivers brief magnetic pulses that stimulate targeted brain regions. With repeated treatment sessions, this stimulation can help normalize activity in brain networks associated with psychiatric symptoms.
A typical session involves:
Sitting comfortably in the TMS chair
Positioning the treatment coil
Receiving repetitive magnetic pulses
Returning to normal activities afterward
Some people notice tapping or clicking sensations and temporary scalp discomfort or headache, particularly early in treatment.
What conditions can TMS treat?
TMS is FDA-cleared for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in appropriate patients.
It isn't the right treatment for everyone, which is why a clinical evaluation is important.
TMS isn't about replacing every other treatment. It's about having another evidence-based option when it may be appropriate.
