I’m on vacation in the Pacific Northwest right now and holy cow. Y’all. The shift from 80's heat and humidity to cold and windy has my body in an absolute meltdown trying to regulate my temperature. I’m wearing layers and I’m still sitting here like a human Popsicle.
Which is when it hit me: cold weather hits women with Hashimoto’s like a ton of bricks. Your metabolism is already running on fumes, your body can’t generate heat, and winter just says “let me make this harder for you.”
So here’s what I’m doing to survive this trip—and what’s actually working:
Layer like your life depends on it. Wool, thermal base layers, a hat you don’t care if you mess up your hair with. And here’s the real talk: change out of damp clothes FAST. That cooling effect will wreck you.
Eat warm things. Soups, stews, ginger tea, warm breakfast. Forget the raw salad situation in winter. Your sluggish digestion needs support.
Move a little. Ten minutes of walking, stretching, light strength work. You’re generating heat AND your mood gets a boost without torching yourself.
Sleep like it’s your job. Dark, cool, quiet room. Same bedtime every night. Winter sleep is already weird—don’t let it tank your thyroid recovery.
Listen to your body seasonally. If your cold intolerance gets worse when temps drop, check your levels. You might need a med adjustment. TSH, free T4, free T3—worth reviewing with your doc.
