Advancing health means looking beyond medicine alone and understanding the many factors that shape the well-being of individuals and communities. As part of Georgetown University Medical Center, the School of Health is a home for scholars and students to achieve a deeper understanding of the interconnections among the most challenging human health issues of our time, and to find solutions. Rooted in the Jesuit value of cura personalis, or care of the whole person, Georgetown prepares students to approach health through collaboration, compassion, and a commitment to equity. With millions of soccer fans set to descend on North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, experts from Georgetown University and MedStar Health have launched a Health Security Operations Center (HSOC) to monitor infectious disease transmission and mitigate global health risks. HSOC functions as a hub for monitoring potential infectious disease threats and supports the mitigation of global health risks. “Mass-gathering events like the World Cup require the kind of coordinated, multidisciplinary situational awareness that no single institution or jurisdiction can provide alone,” said Rebecca Katz, PhD, MPH, director of Georgetown's Center for Global Health Science and Security and director of the Health Security Operations Center. “Our role is to support the people responsible for protecting public health, such as city health departments, hospitals, emergency managers, and many others by providing data and insight to help them assess a complicated situation and act confidently if a risk emerges.” The operations center, located at Georgetown University, will also serve as a unique "living classroom", where graduate and undergraduate students from various universities will provide supervised support and assistance to the center daily. Learn more about HSOC’s core functions and collaborators: https://gumc.georgetown.edu/news-release/new-health-security-operations-center-will-monitor-infectious-disease-risks-during-world-cup/

The Health Security Operations Center is an independent initiative led by Georgetown University and MedStar Health and is not an official program of or sanctioned by, FIFA, or the FIFA World Cup 26.
