There’s a difference between the guilt that tells you something useful (you snapped at someone, you dropped the ball) and the guilt that shows up for no reason at all, just a low hum in the background of everything you do.

If your nervous system learned early on that taking the blame first was the safest move, that guilt can stick around long after it’s useful. It’s not a character flaw. It’s a pattern, and patterns can shift.

You can know exactly where something comes from: the childhood, the relationship, the moment everything changed, and STILL find yourself reacting the same way you always have.

That’s not a lack of effort. It’s a nervous system that learned something and hasn’t had the chance to unlearn it yet.

Talk therapy is a powerful place to build awareness and make meaning. But for a lot of people, awareness alone doesn’t create the change they’re looking for. That’s where approaches like EMDR, IFS, and somatic therapy come in.
EMDR helps your brain process what it’s still holding, not by talking through it, but by working with how memory is actually stored. IFS helps you build a real relationship with the parts of yourself that have been running the show. And somatic therapy works with the body, because that’s where so much of what we’ve been through actually lives.

These three approaches weren’t designed to replace insight. They were designed to go deeper than it.

Swipe to learn how they work together!

Not because everything is “fixed.”
But because your nervous system finally got to process something instead of just carrying it.
EMDR isn’t magic. It doesn’t erase your past. But many people notice they feel a little lighter, clearer, or less emotionally stuck after processing.
Sometimes the shift is subtle. Sometimes it’s profound. Either way, your brain has been doing some serious work.
(And yes... sometimes you still cry five minutes after walking in. 😂)

Lately, I’ve seen the phrase “therapy is political” everywhere, and I’ve had a complicated relationship with it.

Not because I disagree, but because it’s often reduced to something loud or rigid that doesn’t actually capture what thoughtful therapy looks like in practice.

When I use that phrase, I’m not talking about partisanship or turning therapy into debate. I’m talking about the reality that therapy happens inside systems and that those systems shape who feels safe, believed, and protected.

Trauma doesn’t live only in personal history; it’s shaped by context, power, and access. Ignoring that context doesn’t make therapy neutral, it can make it unsafe.

I believe therapy can acknowledge social reality without becoming polarized, and can hold ethics without shaming. I wrote more about how I think about this, including where I struggle with the phrase and what it actually means in my practice, in a longer blog post.

You did enough this week.

Not everything got checked off the list. Not every email got answered. Not every version of yourself showed up perfectly.

And still, you made it through. That counts.
Rest is not a reward you have to earn. It's something your nervous system actually needs.
Give yourself permission to put it down for the night.
Happy Friday. 🌿
