Meet one of our incredible speakers: Tom Shroder

We’re thrilled to welcome Tom Shroder as a speaker at the 5th Annual Gathering of the Pearl on Thursday, September 10th!

An accomplished journalist, writer, and editor, Tom spent many years at The Washington Post and has authored and edited books exploring everything from psychedelic research and extraordinary human experiences to history, journalism, and the stories behind some of the world’s most fascinating events.

His book Old Souls examined scientific investigations into children who report memories of previous lives, while Acid Test explored the resurgence of research into the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. His wide-ranging career reflects a deep curiosity about the questions that challenge what we think we know.

Join us on September 10th for an evening of conversation, curiosity, and connection. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear from Tom Shroder and other titans in the industry firsthand while honoring Annie & Michael Mithoefer.

We’re kicking off the Gathering of the Pearl online auction with an item especially close to our hearts: an 18-inch cultured pearl necklace, generously donated by Dr. David Wright from his family’s collection. Appraised at $4,879.50, bidding opens at $750.

The Pearl takes its name from the way a pearl is formed. Something that begins as an irritant is gradually transformed into something beautiful, reflecting the healing process and the possibility of transforming pain into a meaningful life. This necklace carries that story with it, making it a fitting first feature from this year’s online auction.

Our online auction is now live with new items being added every day! Bid on these incredible items donated by businesses, artists, and services that support the Pearl and help make an impact on accessible mental health in the Western NC community.
