THE 5-MINUTE BATTLE!

“Just five more minutes!” Sound familiar?

Whether it’s leaving the playground, ending screen time, or getting ready for bed, switching activities can be a challenge!

Here are three simple ideas that may help:

✓ Give a gentle heads-up before changing activities.

✓ Use pictures or a simple routine chart.

✓ Make transitions fun with a favorite song.

PALM BEACH COUNTY PARENTS, LET’S HEAR IT!

Which transition is the biggest challenge in your home?

A. Morning routines
B. Ending playtime
C. Bedtime
D. Leaving the house

Change the Story: Make Reading an Adventure

What if tonight's bedtime story had a completely different ending?

Reading together is about more than following the words on a page. It's an opportunity to encourage creativity, communication, and meaningful family connections.

Tonight, try something different: invite your child to become part of the story.

As you turn the pages, pause and explore a few fun questions:

✓ Predict: What do you think will happen next?

✓ Imagine: What would you name this character?

✓ Act it out: Can you make the same expression as the character?

✓ Explore: What's the funniest or most interesting thing you notice?

✓ Create: Skip the words on a page and invent your own story together.

The goal isn't to finish the book. It's to enjoy the experience together.

Whether your child answers with words, gestures, pictures, or imaginative play, every opportunity to participate can make storytime more engaging.

Palm Beach County Families — Let's Share!

Make Mornings a Little Easier

School mornings can feel busy for everyone. One simple idea that may help is to make the routine predictable and give your child a role in it.

Try breaking the morning into a few familiar steps:

✓ Get dressed
✓ Brush teeth
✓ Eat breakfast
✓ Grab backpack
✓ Ready to go!

For younger children, pictures can work just as well as words. As each step is finished, let your child mark it off, move a magnet, or celebrate the accomplishment together.

And remember—independence doesn't have to mean doing everything alone. Helping with one part of the routine is still participation and something worth recognizing.

Palm Beach County parents and caregivers: What's the ONE part of your morning routine that always seems to take the longest?

Share your experience in the comments. Other families may be navigating the very same challenge.

Everyday Routines = Learning Opportunities
Everyday routines can become little opportunities for connection.

Making breakfast, packing a lunch, setting the table, or helping prepare dinner may seem like ordinary parts of the day—but they can also give children natural opportunities to participate, communicate, make choices, and practice independence.

Try offering simple choices such as, “Do you want the apple or banana?” Or invite your child to help with one small job, like carrying napkins to the table, stirring ingredients, or putting something away.

It doesn't have to be perfect. The goal is simply to create moments where your child can participate with you.

What's one kitchen job your child loves to help with—or would probably love to try? Tell us in the comments!

Follow Center for Behavior Analysis for more practical ideas families can incorporate into everyday life.

Play is more than just fun. 🩷

For children, everyday play can create opportunities to practice communication, taking turns, problem-solving, waiting, requesting help, and connecting with the people around them.

And it doesn’t have to be complicated. Building blocks, puzzles, pretend play, coloring, or even a favorite toy can create meaningful moments for learning and connection.

What’s an activity your child could play for hours?

Tell us in the comments — we’d love to hear what your family enjoys.

Follow Center for Behavior Analysis for more practical tips, resources, and support for families.
