Disability Pride is a time for recognition and celebration of the Disabled identity and the unique culture of disability communities.

When the ADA was passed in 1990, Disability Pride started to blossom into a worldwide celebration. The movement continued to grow over the years. In 2022, Gov. Tim Walz declared July as Disability Pride Month in Minnesota. ACT hosted the first official disability pride event in Minnesota in 2023.

For the month of June, our Scott, Managed Care, and Hennepin units have been collecting items for Backpack Project MN.

Backpack Project MN collects items for unhoused teens. The organization packs and distributes 500-600 backpacks a year to different youth shelters in the metro area, including, YouthLink MN and Bridge for Youth. Backpack Project partners with 4 different shelters across the metro. They are currently collecting donations for the September, or back to school, where they will be assembling and delivering about 300 packs.

Items we collected:

wipes
hair care (clips, small braid bands)
mini hand sanitizer bottles
cosmetics
adult coloring books/sketch pads
mini sew kits
toothbrush, toothpaste, floss
